Obedience
Leader Introduction
Welcome students as they arrive with their parents.
OPTIONAL: As they arrive, play the song “Obey.”
Today’s Bible story reinforces and expands on the lesson from last time about Noah. The Bible tells us that God looked at the evil in the world and decided to destroy every living thing with a flood. Noah, however, found favor with God. He was righteous and the only blameless person living at the time. God called Noah to build an ark to protect his family and two of every kind of animal. Noah obeyed God’s instructions exactly, and God protected Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark.
*Scripture is quoted from the New Living Translation.
Obey
Optional Opening Game
- Container that holds water (wash tub, plastic storage container, etc.)
- Water to fill the container about half full
- Optional: table
- Towels for drying hands or spills and placing the wet objects on
- A variety of objects that either float or sink, at least one per child in the class. Choose from some of the following or add your own: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, rock, mulch chip, metal spoon, metal bolt, metal washer, key, bar of soap, toy boat, metal paper clip, plastic bottle cap, plastic spoon, plastic fork, plastic straw, plastic cup, feather, glue stick with lid on, guitar pick, clarinet reed, plastic golf ball, ping pong ball, rubber ball, bouncy ball, whiffle ball, unsharpened pencil, twig, leaf, etc.
- Bag to carry the objects
Gather objects that sink or float—at least one per child—and place the objects in a bag.
Place the container on the floor or a table and fill it about halfway with water.
Have towels ready to mop up any spills and dry wet items after they have been used.
Sit down with the children in a large circle around the container so everyone can see.
In the Bible story, Noah built a huge boat called an ark, exactly as God told him. Because Noah obeyed all of God’s instructions, the huge, heavy boat floated! God told Noah to paint the outside of the ark with tar. The tar kept the boat air-tight, so it would not sink—even with all the people and animals inside! Noah was obedient, and God protected him in the ark from the flood.
Hold up the bag of items. In this bag are some items that will float like a boat and some that will sink. You will each have a turn to select an item from the bag and guess whether it will float or sink.
Options: You may allow children to see all the items and choose one on their turn or have them reach into the bag without looking to choose an item.
Next, the whole class will have a “float vote.” You will raise your hands if you think the item will float or keep your hands down if you think it will sink! Finally, the person who chose the item will put it into the water, and we’ll see what happens!
Note: the teacher may place each object in the water to prevent children from getting wet.
Start the activity and allow every child to have at least one turn. Leave some objects in the water if possible. To make room, you may need to remove some and place them on a towel to dry.
That was fun! Did anyone guess all of the items correctly? Children respond.

God Calls Noah
In today’s lesson, we will learn the importance of obedience. Obedience means to cheerfully do what you are told right away.
It’s time now to watch our Bible story about a man named Noah. God told Noah to build something very big! The Bible tells us that Noah did everything God told him to do. Because Noah obeyed, God protected Noah, his family, and more animals than we can even count!
Teaching Time
- Bible or Superbook Bible App
Optional: Bring the props from Lesson 1 so children can act out the story as you teach.
Tell the Bible story slowly using the bullets provided. Be expressive! Bring excitement and interest to the story by varying your facial expression, voice, and volume level.
When God speaks, use a deep (but not scary) voice.
Pause after the words in bold text to model an action or sound to imitate.
● A long time ago, people on the earth thought and did evil things. Make a sad face and lower your head.
● But one man was different. What was his name? Noah.
● Noah was different. He listened to God and obeyed the Lord. Make a happy face.
● But because so many people were so bad, God decided to do something. What did He decide? To send a huge flood.
● God told Noah to build a giant boat to keep Noah, his family, and all the animals safe during the flood. Cross your arms over your chest in a hugging motion.
● What was the giant boat called? An ark.
● Did Noah obey just some of God’s instructions—or did he obey ALL of them? ALL of them!
● When the ark was built, God sent lots of animals to enter the ark, two by two—a mommy animal and a daddy animal, so someday they could have baby animals!
● Noah and the animals entered the ark. March in place.
● God sent the rain. Have children make the sound of rain by rapidly slapping their knees.
● How long did it rain? 40 days and 40 nights.
● It rained so long that even the highest mountains were covered by water! Stand on tiptoes and stretch your arms up into the air.
● What happened to Noah and his family and all the animals? They stayed safe on the ark!
● Finally, the rain stopped. What did God send to dry up the water? A strong wind.
● What does the wind sound like? Make a blowing sound.
● After many days, Noah opened a window and sent something out to find dry land. What did he send? A bird called a dove.
● The dove returned to the ark because there wasn’t a dry place to land. Make flying motions.
● Noah sent the dove a second time. This time the dove came back with an olive branch. This meant the dove found a nice tree to land on, but there was still lots of water on the ground.
● Noah sent the dove once more, but this time it did not come back. Make flying motions and smile.
● Why didn’t the dove return? It found a dry place to live.
● Then God said it was time to leave the ark. Let’s all march in place.
● The first thing Noah did was to build an altar. Why? To worship God.
● Noah thanked God for keeping his family and the animals safe. Bow head and fold hands in prayer.
● Then, God put a rainbow in the sky as a sign of His promise. What did He promise? He would never again flood the whole earth.
● Now, whenever you see a rainbow in the sky, remember that God always keeps His promises! Shout “God always keeps His promises!”
● So, what did you learn from our Bible story? We should be like Noah and obey God!
● Let’s all jump up and down and shout, “I will obey God!” Children respond.
Object to GO!
- 1–2 hand-held weights (1–2 pounds is ideal)
- Optional: hand-held weights image (provided)
Hold a weight in one or both hands and do bicep curls and lifts a
few times while leading a short discussion with the following comments and
questions:
● Who knows what I have in my hand(s)? Weights, barbells.
● What do you use them to do? Exercise, build muscles, get stronger.
● Have you ever seen someone using weights like this? Where? In a gym, in our house, outside, on a video.
● In today’s video, Rig is in a gym and is about to teach one someone how to make a very different muscle stronger. Who do you think Rig is teaching: Miss Tina, Gizmo, Gears, or Widget? Children guess.
●
Good
guesses! Let’s watch the video and see!
Leave the question unanswered until it is revealed in the video.
Play Video (The Obedience Muscle)
The Obedience Muscle
Today we are going to Rig’s Workout Room to visit Rig and Gears.
Optional Discussion following the video.
● Let’s see who guessed correctly. Who was Rig teaching to build muscles? Gears.
● What muscle did Gears want to strengthen first? His arms (biceps).
● What muscle did Rig want to strengthen instead? The obedience muscle.
● Is there really an obedience muscle on our bodies? No!
● No, but the more we obey, the more we grow strong to be like Jesus!
● When should we obey; right away or later? Right away!
● Gears finally picked up his toys, but he complained about it. This wasn’t really obeying with his heart. Should we be mad, sad, or cheerful when we obey? Cheerful.

Your God… Raise the other hand and point to the sky, so both hands are raised.
Has commanded you... Cup both hands around your mouth as if to shout.
To follow… March in place.
Note: Some preschool children may not be able to memorize the entire SuperVerse. They may simply repeat it with you. Be sure all children understand its meaning.
Prayer Time
Close the lesson with a simple prayer to encourage the children to always cheerfully obey God and to thank Him for His protection every day.
For example: Dear God, thank You for protecting Noah, his family, and all of the animals. Help us to always obey You and those who care for us and love us. Thank You for each rainbow in the sky to help us remember You always keep Your Promises. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
