Leader Introduction
Welcome students as they arrive with their parents.
OPTIONAL: As they arrive, play the song “Patience in Waiting.”
Today’s Bible story reinforces and expands the lesson from Lesson 1 about Abraham and Sarah and the covenant that God made with them. Children will learn the importance of patience and the benefits of waiting and trusting God.
*Scripture is quoted from the New Living Translation
Optional Opening Game
- Round balloons—at least one per child, plus extras
- Blue or black bedsheet/blanket, tablecloth, or several towels
- Permanent marker
- Painter's tape or masking tape
Blow up the balloons and tie them closed.
With the marker, draw 2–3 large stars around each balloon.
Place a mark or tape a line on the floor.
Lay the bedsheet on the floor at least 15 feet from the line or mark. Depending on the class size, unfold the sheet or leave it partially folded.
Have you ever looked up in the sky on a clear night? Children respond.
What did you see? Stars, moon, clouds, etc.
Stand on the bedsheet. This sheet represents a starry sky at night. Hmmm, wait a minute: there is one problem. I don’t see any stars in the sky, do you? Children respond.
Hold up a balloon. What do you see on this balloon? Stars.
I have an idea—why don’t we play a game to add these stars to the sky!
Give a balloon to each child on his /her turn. One child plays at a time.
Optional: For large classes, two players may play simultaneously.
Players advance the balloon by holding it with one hand and hitting it with the other. After hitting it, they must patiently wait for the balloon to fall to the floor before picking it up and hitting it again.
Once the balloon rests on the bedsheet, the next player takes a turn.
Conclusion: Good job! Look at all those stars in the sky! Did anyone put their star on the sky with the first hit? Children respond.
No, it took patience, didn’t it? You had to keep trying until you made it. I am proud of you because no one gave up or complained!
In today’s video, God makes a promise about the stars in the sky. Let’s watch to see what that promise is about.
Video Lesson
Abraham and Sarah
In this lesson, we will learn the importance of patience in waiting as we trust in God’s promises given to us in the Bible. Let’s watch our Bible story to see who trusted in God’s promise, even when it took a long time.

Bible Story
Teaching Time
- Story Card Page
- Stage Window Template
- Tri-fold Project Display Board (36"x48") or medium-sized box
- Card stock—two sheets
- Painter's tape or masking tape
- Scissors
- Eight craft sticks
- Glue or glue stick
- Optional: utility knife or craft knife
- Yardstick or ruler
- Table
- Marker
- Bible or Superbook Bible App
Make one copy of the Story Card Page on cardstock in color or black and white.
Make a copy of the Stage Window Template on cardstock and carefully cut it out.
Cut out the eight individual story cards.
On the back of each card, write a number (1–8) in the top right corner matching the card number on the front.
Place glue about halfway down one side of a craft stick. Place the back of one story card on the glued craft stick. Press the front of the card to attach the card to the stick firmly. Repeat this process for all seven remaining cards.
Use the Stage Window Template to mark a 4 x 10-inch rectangle on the middle front of the display board, about 2 inches from the top.
Carefully cut out and remove the cardboard using the knife and scissors. This is the “stage.”
Optional: Substitute a box instead of the display board. Cut out one side of the box. Then use the template to cut out the opposite side of the box as described above. Tape the box to the table for more stability.
Place the cardboard stage on the table.
Place the figure sticks in a row in numerical order on the table behind the stage.
What did Gizmo do so Gears could watch the Bible story while he was waiting for his package at the Post Office? Gizmo streamed it on Gears's phone.
Today, you are going to “stream” the Bible story over the phone like Gizmo did for Gears.
Point to the stage. Let’s pretend that this stage is a phone, and the window is the phone screen.
Point to the stick figures. On each card is a picture that represents someone or something important in the Bible story.
The teaching bullets below are written to tell the story with two child volunteers.
The children hold the designated stick figures in the stage window at the appropriate times.
The teacher will stand behind the stage with the children to narrate and assist.
Optional: The teacher may teach and move the craft stick figures without the children’s participation.
Choose two children to stand behind the stage with you. Gently tap the child on the shoulder and quietly instruct them which figure to insert or remove from the window. (Figure numbers and instructions are in parenthesis.)
Note: Figures should stay visible in the window until instructed to remove. Each figure will only be used once. After use, set each figure aside to avoid confusion.
Add interest to the story by varying voice and volume levels.
● (Enter Figure #1) A long time ago, there was a man named Abraham. When this Bible story took place, he was 99 years old! That is VERY old! Abraham loved, obeyed, and trusted God, so he was very wise.
● (Enter Figure #2) Abraham was married to a woman named Sarah. She was not as old as Abraham, but she had lived a long life too. Sarah was 89 years old. That is very old, too!
● (Exit Figure #2) Because God loved Abraham so much, He made a covenant with him. A covenant is a very big and important promise.
● (Exit Figure #1. Enter Figure #3) God promised Abraham that his wife Sarah would give birth to a son in one year!
● (Enter Figure #4) This was a very big surprise to Abraham at his old age!
● (Exit Figure #3. Enter Figure #5) God wasn’t done yet! He told Abraham that his family would have more children than the number of stars in the sky. Wow!
● (Exit Figure #4 and #5. Enter Figure #6) Sarah was in her tent listening. She couldn’t believe what she had heard!
● (Exit Figure #6. Enter Figure #7) Sarah thought it was impossible for her and Abraham to have a baby because they were so old! Instead of believing God’s promise, she laughed silently.
● God knows and hears everything! He even asked Abraham why Sarah laughed!
● (Enter Figure #8) God kept His promise, and exactly one year later, Sarah gave birth to a baby boy named Isaac.
● Remember, trusting and waiting on God is always wise because He always keeps His promises!
Optional: One child volunteer can manipulate all the stick figures for small classes.
If time permits, allow different pairs of children to perform the Bible story as you narrate.
Object to Go
- Backpack
- Optional: Backpack Image (provided)
Put the backpack on and turn so the children can see it or show the image. If wearing the backpack, remove it and place it on the floor. Lead a discussion with the comments and questions below:
● Do you know what this is? A backpack.
● Have you ever worn one? Where could you see someone wearing one? At school, on the bus, in the park, in the woods, etc.
● What can you carry inside? Clothes, shoes, school supplies, food, water, or toys.
● In today’s video, someone is wearing a backpack. Do you think it is Miss Tina, Gears, Gizmo, Rig, or Widget? Children guess.
● I think some of you guessed correctly! Let’s watch the video now to find out who was wearing a backpack and what they were doing!
Leave the question unanswered until it is revealed in the video.
Today, we are going to catch up with Miss Tina and Gizmo. Gizmo is in a hurry and Miss Tina is slowing him down!
Play Video (Late Bloomers)
Wax On, Wax On
● Hold up the backpack or Object to Go Image! Who was wearing a backpack? Miss Tina.
● Raise your hand if you guessed correctly. Children respond.
● Why did Miss Tina need to sit down? She needed rest. She was tired, and her feet hurt.
● Who was having a hard time showing patience? Gizmo.
● Why was Gizmo not able to be patient? He was excited to see a rare flower bloom that lasted only a few minutes.
● What three things did Gizmo offer to do for Miss Tina to get her to the flower faster? To fly her using his booster rockets, to push her, to pull her.
● What did Gizmo offer to give Miss Tina if she stopped resting? Cookies, money.
● What caused Gizmo to feel bad and apologize for not showing patience? He remembered they wanted to see the flower together. He didn’t want to leave Miss Tina behind and go alone.
● What went off and made a loud noise inside Gizmo? His alarm clock.
Sometimes when we have a hard time waiting, it may be because we are being selfish. When we think of ourselves more than the needs of others, we can be pushy and say unkind things. Remember, in times like that, we should stop and ask God to give us the strength to be patient!

Hebrews 10:36: (CEV)
Verse to Go
Stand facing the children and lead them in repeating phrases and imitating the motions.
The last time we met, we learned the first part of the memory verse: Learn to be patient.
We practiced showing patience the last time by slowly counting to three before saying the words of the verse loud together. Let’s try it again!
Count to three holding up a different finger for each count. ONE, TWO, THREE! Learn to Be Patient.
Now let’s practice the motions we learned the last time.
Learn… Point to your head with one index finger.
To be patient… Lift both hands palm-down and then slowly push down.
Repeat a few more times slowly.
Now, I think you are ready for the second part of the verse: so you will please God and be given what He has promised.
Let’s say it together and add actions to help us learn the words.
So you… Point finger to self.
Will please God… Make a big smile and point to the ceiling.
And be given… Hold one hand out with palm up (to receive).
What He has promised… With the other hand, point to the ceiling.
Repeat a few more times slowly.
Showing patience isn’t always easy. In fact, it is often hard to wait on just about anything! When we choose to show patience, God will help us do it because He grows patience inside us!
Note: Preschool children may not be able to memorize the entire verse. They may simply repeat it with you. Be sure all children understand its meaning and that being patient means to trust and wait without complaining.
Prayer Time
Close the lesson with a simple prayer to encourage children to demonstrate patience.
For example: Dear Jesus, help us to show patience and kindness to others instead of being in a hurry and saying and doing things that can be hurtful. Thank You for giving us Your patience inside us so that we can choose to show Your love and kindness every day. In Your name, we pray, Amen.
Music Time
Patience in Waiting

Encourage the children to sing with Miss Tina and the robots during the chorus and imitate playing the piano with Miss Tina during the verses.
Patience in Waiting
Sing the chorus together:
Patience in waiting,
God is working,
Patience in waiting,
God is turning to you,
and He’s heard your cry.
Optional motions for the last line:
(Turning) Children spin around one time.
(Heard) Cup ears with hands.
