Leader Introduction

Welcome students as they arrive with their parents.

OPTIONAL: As they arrive, play the song “Honesty.”

Today’s Bible story reinforces and expands on the previous lessons about Jesus and Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a despised and wealthy tax collector in Jericho. Everyone avoided Zacchaeus, that is, everyone except for Jesus.

At Quantum Labs, Super-Gizmo is testing out the new super-boosters designed by Gears. Gears believes there is a problem, but Super-Gizmo is in denial. Is Gears overreacting or is Super-Gizmo not being honest with himself?

Children will learn the importance of honesty—to be truthful in all you say and do! Today’s focus is being honest with yourself.

*Scripture is quoted from the New Living Translation unless noted.

Optional Opening Game

  • Happy Gizmo Sign
  • Sad Gizmo Sign
  • Painter's tape or masking tape
  • Two chairs

Make one copy of each sign in color or black and white.

Tape a sign to the back of a chair.

Tape a line several feet long on the floor, leaving lots of space on both sides of it.

Place the Happy Gizmo Sign chair on one side of the end of the line.

Place the Sad Gizmo Sign chair on the opposite side of the same end of the line.
The two signs should now be facing the line on the other side of it.

Important Note: This game setup will also be used in the Teaching following the Bible story video.

Have children stand in a single row on the tape and face the signs. Make sure children have space in front and behind.

Read the following true and untrue statements. Add your own statements as desired. Children decide if you are being truthful, then move to the Happy Gizmo side of the tape for true statements or to the Sad Gizmo side of the tape for untrue statements. Have a quick talk about each statement, especially Bible truths so children know the truth, like “God Loves You”, especially if any children decide the statement is untrue.

For untrue statements, ask children to make a statement that is true. For example, if Gizmo isn’t a bird, what is he? (A robot). True statements are in bold text.

If two true or untrue statements are read in a row, children can move back and forth from one side and return back to the side where they were standing.

Do as many statements as time permits. True statements are bold text.

God Loves you.

It is okay to tell a lie.

Jesus always forgives you.

Gizmo is a bird.

The sun is bright.

You should always tell the truth.

Miss Tina is a robot.

A green light means GO!

Gears the robot has feet.

A soccer ball is square.

A stop sign is red.

Fish live in trees.

Raindrops are wet.

You can see the moon at night.

Cats bark.

You should always be kind.

God made the world and everything in it.

Vegetables grow in the sky.

Jesus is God’s Son.

Dogs meow.

Widget the robot can fly.

Giraffes have short necks.

Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.

Ants are bigger than elephants.

A banana is a fruit.

Whales live in the ocean.

Airplanes can’t fly.

Rabbits can’t hop.

You should be truthful in all you do and say.

Rig is smaller than the other robots.

Conclusion: It is always important to know if what you hear or see is the truth. The Holy Spirit will help you to know what is honest and true if You ask Him.

Video Lesson

Play Video (Bible Story)

Bible Story

In today’s video, Zacchaeus knew that Zacchaeus wasn’t an honest and truthful man. But, Jesus loved him anyway and knew He could change Zacchaeus’ heart. Let’s watch the video to find out what happened.

Teaching Time

  • Use the materials and game set up in the Optional Opening Game
  • Bible or Superbook Bible App

Text: Acts 9:1-19

Discuss the Bible story in the same way the opening game was played.

Have children stand in a single row on the tape and face the signs. Make sure children have space in front and behind.

We watched the Bible story about Zacchaeus; now let’s see if we can remember what we learned.

Read the following true and untrue statements about the Bible story. Children decide if you are being truthful, then move to the Happy Gizmo side of the tape for true statements or to the Sad Gizmo side of the tape for untrue statements. If two true or untrue statements are read in a row, children can move back and forth from one side and return back to the side where they were standing. For untrue statements, ask children to make the statement true. For example: If Zacchaeus didn’t climb a ladder to see Jesus, what did he climb? (A tree).

True statements are bold text.

In today’s Bible story, Jesus visited a town called Jerusalem. Children choose a side.

What town did Jesus visit? Jericho.

Only about five people came out to see Jesus walk through Jericho. Children choose a side.

A large crowd of people came to see Jesus.

A man named Zacchaeus came to see Jesus too. Children choose a side.

Zacchaeus was a farmer. Children choose a side.

He was a tax collector.

Zacchaeus was a rich man. Children choose a side.

Everyone liked Zacchaeus because he was an honest man. Children choose a side.

No one liked Zacchaeus because he cheated them when they paid their taxes.

Zacchaeus was a short man so he could not see Jesus over the crowd. Children choose a side.

Zacchaeus climbed a flagpole so he could see Jesus. Children choose a side.

Zacchaeus climbed a (sycamore) tree.

Jesus did not see Zacchaeus and passed by the tree. Children choose a side.

Jesus saw Zacchaeus and stopped.

Jesus called Zacchaeus by name and told him to come down from the tree so he could go to Zacchaeus’ house. Children choose a side.

Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and was excited to take Jesus to his house. Children choose a side.

The crowd of people was happy that Jesus went to Zacchaeus’ home. Children choose a side.

The people were upset because they said Zacchaeus was a sinner.

Zacchaeus said he would not give any of his money to the poor. Children choose a side.

He said he would give half of his money (wealth) to the poor.

Zacchaeus said he would return four times as much money back to anyone he had cheated on their taxes. Children choose a side.

Jesus said that he came to seek and save those who are lost. Children choose a side.

Good job everyone, you remembered a lot from the video! Jesus came to save the lost, like Zacchaeus. Today, He still looks for people who are lost and need their sins forgiven!

Object to GO!

  • Toy parachute or assemble one, see below
  • Optional: paper napkin, paper towel, or paper coffee filter, tape, string, scissors, hole punch, metal washer, paper clip or four-hole button
  • Parachute Image (provided)
Make a copy of the parachute image in color and black and white.
Optional: Make a parachute. Cut four 12" pieces of string. Unfold napkin. Cover both sides of each corner with a strip of tape. Punch a hole and tie a knot on the top of the napkin. Now, thread the other end of the stings through a buttonhole, paper clip or metal washer, and tie knots and/or place a strip of tape around the assembly.

Hold up the toy parachute or the image. Lead a discussion with the comments and questions below:

● Do you know what this is called? A parachute.

Optional: if using a toy parachute, demonstrate how it works. Hold it up and let it drop to the floor. If time permits, let children each take a turn to drop the parachute.

● Who might wear a parachute? A pilot, soldier, skydiver, military, medical or rescue worker.

● What does it do? It opens up and keeps you from falling to the ground too fast.

● Raise your hand if you know someone who has used a parachute. Children respond.

● In the next video, a robot needs to use a parachute to be safe. Do you think it is Grip, Doodad, Super-Gizmo, Mighty Gear-O, Rig, Widget or Protonatron? Children guess.

● Let’s watch the video to see who guessed correctly and why the robot was flying in the sky!

Leave the question unanswered until it is revealed in the video.

Play Video (SuperGizmo)

SuperGizmo

After the video, ask the following discussion questions:

● Raise your hand if you guessed Super-Gizmo used a parachute. Children respond.

● What name did Gears want Super Gizmo to call him? Mighty Gear-O

● What did Gears want to be for Super-Gizmo? His superhero sidekick.

● Gears warned Gizmo there was a problem with parts of his superhero gear. What parts could stop working? His super-boosters.

● Did Super Gizmo tell the truth about the super-boosters? No! He said they were fine.

● What did Gears say would happen if the super-boosters stopped working? Gizmo would fall from the sky.

● What did Gears do to save Gizmo? He opened the (emergency) parachute.

● Who did Super-Gizmo say he must be honest with? Himself and Gears.

Super-Gizmo was finally honest with himself. He said that even a superhero needs help. You must never be afraid or embarrassed to be honest and ask for help from God and from others. Honesty is important in your friendships, with yourself, and especially with God. Honesty is being truthful in all you say and do!

Verse to GO!

  • Bible or the Superbook Bible App

Proverbs 12:22 (NLT)

"The LORD detests lying lips, but He delights in those who tell the truth."

Today’s Bible memory verse is Proverbs 12:22. Say the memory verse slowly.

”The LORD detests lying lips, but He delights in those who tell the truth.”

The word detest means to hate or dislike something very, very much.

When you delight in something it means that it brings you happiness and joy.

Let’s learn this verse together with some actions.

Stand facing the children and lead them to repeat phrases and imitate the motions.

The Lord…. point to sky.

Detests lying lips…. shake head no, point both index fingers to lips.

But He delights … make a big smile and applaud.

In those who tell the truth…. Place hand over heart and nod head yes.

Repeat slowly a few more times.

God hates lies but when you are honest, it brings Him happiness and joy. Raise your hand if you want to delight God every day! Raise your hand with children.

Note: Preschool children may not be able to memorize the entire verse. They may simply repeat it with you. Be sure all children understand its meaning.

Prayer Time

Close the lesson with a simple prayer to encourage the children to be honest.

For example: Dear God, help us to be honest and truthful and never be afraid to ask for help when we need it. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Music Time

No More Lies

The lyrics and chords for this song are found in Resources.

Create your own motions or use the suggested motions as seen in the Quantum Karaoke “No More Lies” under Resources.

Play the video song “No More Lies” to your students.

The children may want to imitate Miss Tina and the robots playing instruments (singing into a microphone, playing keyboards, guitars and drums). Encourage the children to dance and move to the music.

No More Lies

Singing Activity

Optional: Invite someone to play the guitar or piano and lead the children in singing and doing motions to the song "Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man." (A good key for children's voices on this song is G.)

Lead the children in singing the song "Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man." Additional instructions are located in the previous lesson.

Take Home Coloring Page

  • Booster Problems Take-Home Coloring Page
  • Crayons or washable markers

The Take-Home Coloring Page located in Resources can be printed and given to students to color at the end of class if time, then to take home.

Print one page for each child plus extras.

Provide crayons or washable markers for children.

As children color, review today’s lesson using the discussion points below:

● Why doesn’t Super-Gizmo use his super-boosters to keep him in the air? They stopped working.

● Why didn’t Super-Gizmo listen to Gears? He liked flying and didn’t want to stop.

● Does it matter to God if you lie? Yes, He does not like lies, He detests lies.

● How does the memory verse say God feels when you tell the truth? He is delighted, happy.

Super-Gizmo could have been hurt when he wasn’t truthful. Telling a lie is never right and could even be dangerous to you and others.
