Leader Introduction

Welcome students as they arrive with their parents.

OPTIONAL: As they arrive, play the song “Humble More”

Today’s Bible story expands on the previous lessons about Saul and his miraculous conversion on the road to Damascus. Saul was transformed from a prideful Pharisee to a bold but humbled preacher of the Gospel.

Saul isn’t the only one who changed. Back at Quantum Labs, “sportsball” star Rig has closed a massive sponsorship deal with a bottled water company. Reliable, humble Rig has become big Rig and even worse—-prideful Rig! Children learn the importance of being humble: to care about the needs of other people and not to think you’re more important than anyone else.

*Scripture is quoted from the New Living Translation unless noted.

Optional Opening Game

  • Humble Face Sign
  • Humble Trait Pages (2)
  • Scissors
  • Painter's Tape or Masking tape
  • One container - medium size box or clean trash can

Make one copy of the Humble Face Sign in color or black and white.

Tape the Humble Face Sign to the front of the box or container.

Make one copy each of the two Humble Trait Pages with 12 images total. If there are more than 12 children in the class, make enough copies for each child to have one card.

Cut out the twelve Humble Trait Cards.

Tape or mark a line on the floor.

Place the container with the Humble Face Sign facing the line about 4-6 feet from the line. Adjust this distance as desired based on the age and ability of the players.

Place the cards in a pile behind the line.

If you were here before and saw our Bible story, was Saul prideful or humble before he met Jesus? Prideful.

Yes, he was filled with too much pride. When Saul’s heart changed, he was filled with humbleness.

Point to the container. We are going to fill this container with things you would do or say to show you are a humble person.

The first player takes a Humble Trait Card from the pile and gives it to the leader to read aloud.

Note: If a player is able to read the card, allow the child to read it aloud.

Say a simple sentence using the word or phrase, for example:

A humble person is kind to others. A humble person listens to others. When you are humble, you don’t think you are more important than others.

The player then crumples up the card into a ball, stands behind the line, and tries to toss it into the container to fill it with humbleness. If the player misses, he/she tries again from the spot where the crumpled ball lands and keeps trying until it goes into the container.

Optional: Play another round and move the box further away to provide more of a challenge.

Straighten out the crumpled paper balls and play as before.

When a card is chosen, ask the children if they can think of a way to be or do what is on the card to show humbleness.

Conclusion: It is never good to be filled with too much pride; we should be filled with humbleness instead! A great way to start each day is to ask God to help you to be humble and loving, no matter what happens.

Bible Story

Saul

In today’s video, Saul is on the way to the city of Damascus to do what He thinks is right, but God has a very different plan for Him. Let’s watch the video to find out what happens to Saul.

Teaching Time

  • Bible or Superbook Bible App
  • Clear drinking glass
  • Large bowl or pan
  • Table
  • Two containers or bottles of water (each with enough water to fill the drinking glass)
  • Towel

Place the items on the table and cover with the towel.

Text: Acts 9:1-19

Saul was a Pharisee. He knew God’s Law and obeyed it. The Pharisees were full of pride and liked people to watch them pray and give offerings in the temple. They were jealous of Jesus and wanted to stop Jesus’ followers. Saul believed he was doing what was right, but he was actually fighting

against God’s plan for Jesus to save people from our sins. This all changed when Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus! Saul learned that Jesus is God’s Son, and Saul realized that what he had been doing was completely wrong.

Optional: Object Talk

Uncover the items.

Hold up the empty glass over the bowl. Let’s pretend this glass is Saul.

Before Saul met Jesus, was he full of pride or was he full of humbleness? Pride.

Hold up the container of water over the bowl. Let’s pretend this water is pride.

Pour the water slowly into the glass until it is almost full. Saul is now filled with pride.

What did Saul see when Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus. A bright light.

Yes, the light of Jesus was so bright that Saul was blinded. Saul went to Damascus, then prayed and waited for three days. Jesus sent a brave Christian named Ananias to pray for Saul to see and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Slowly pour water from the glass into the bowl until it is empty.

As Saul sat in darkness and prayed and waited for three days, the pride inside Saul became less, and less, and less until it was gone.

Hold up the second container of water over the bowl. Let’s pretend this water is humbleness.

Pour the water in the glass until it is almost full. What is Saul filled with now? Humbleness.

Saul’s heart was now filled with humbleness instead of pride. He cared about other people who needed to know that Jesus loves them and died for their sins! He cared more about those people than his own needs!

Saul was baptized and became known by his Roman name of Paul He traveled from city to city telling others that Jesus is God’s Son and He died on the cross to save them from their sins! He also wrote many letters to encourage Christians, and we can read some of those letters today because they became books of the Bible!

Object to GO!

Optional: If you don’t have a water bottle, make a copy of the Water Bottle Image in color or black and white.

Hold up the water bottle or image of one. Lead a discussion with the comments and questions below:

● What is in this bottle? Water.

● Where do you see people drinking bottles of water? Everywhere, games, home, working out, playing, in church, at school.

● Water tastes so good when you are playing or working outside. Water is good for your body. It is healthier than soda, pop, or other sweet drinks.

● In the next video, one robot becomes famous and makes commercials for bottled water. Do you think it is Gears, Gizmo, Mr. Gizmo, Rig, Widget or Protonatron? Children guess.

● Let’s watch the video to see who guessed correctly and if the new star robot stays humble.

Leave the question unanswered until it after the video.

Play Video (Rig gets Big)

Rig gets Big

● Hold up the water bottle. Which bot is making bottled water commercials? Rig.

● Raise your hand if you guessed Rig. Children respond.

● What did Rig do to become so popular? He was honest and humble when he said his catch didn’t count and his team lost the big game.

● What food does Rig tell Gears to bring him from a food truck? A taco.

● Who called for Rig on Miss Tina’s phone? His coach.

● What did Rig miss all week because of the commercials? His team’s practices.

● Why did Rig think he didn’t need to practice? Because he was popular, he was the favorite player (on the Jurassibots). He thought he was better than everyone.

● What would happen if Rig missed more practices? He would get kicked off the team.

● What did Rig say he forgot to do when he became so popular? He forgot to be humble.

Optional Object Talk

· Magnifying Glass or Magnifier Phone App

• Penny

• Table

Place the penny on the table.

What is this coin? A penny.

Yes. Have 2-3 children gather around the table. Explain that all will have a chance to look.

Hold the magnifying glass over the penny and slowly raise it to make the penny appear bigger. Repeat until all the children have observed the coin. Note: If using a magnifier app on your phone, zoom out to make the penny appear bigger.

How did the penny look different in the magnifying glass? Bigger, larger.

Hold the penny up for all to see. Yes, it looked bigger, but is it really bigger? No.

No, the penny only looked bigger through the magnifying glass even though it was the same size.

Rig was usually humble and kind. He cared about other people’s feelings. But after he became popular, he saw himself differently. He was filled with so much pride that he saw himself as bigger – like the penny in the magnifying glass! He saw himself as more important than other people, even his teammates!

After talking with Miss Tina, Rig realized that he was filled with pride and that He was wrong to think he was more important or bigger than other people. He had forgotten to be humble and this made him unhappy. Rig did the right thing and said he was sorry. It’s good to have humble Rig back, isn’t it!

Verse to GO!

  • Bible or the Superbook Bible App

Philippians 2:3 (CEV)

"Don't be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves."

Children will practice the first part of the verse today.

Today’s Bible memory verse is Philippians 2:3. Say the memory verse slowly.

“Don't be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves.”

To be jealous means to feel unhappy or angry because someone has something you want.

To consider means to carefully think about something.

Today, we will practice the first part of this verse together.

Stand facing the children and lead them in to repeat phrases and imitate the motions.

Don’t be jealous or proudplace one hand palm up in front of you (stop) and shake head no.

But be humblelower head, place hands together as if in prayer.

Repeat slowly a few more times.

Before Rig became a star, he was humble and kind. After he became famous, He was filled with pride and thought he was better than other people. The good news is that Rig realized his mistake and asked forgiveness. Rig’s heart was filled with humbleness again, and he knew his teammates were just as important as he was.

Note: Preschool children may not be able to memorize the entire verse. They may simply repeat it with you. Be sure all children understand its meaning.

Prayer Time

Close the lesson in a simple prayer to encourage the children to be humble in how they see themselves.

For example: Dear God, help us to be humble and never think that we are more important than others. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Music Time

Music Time

The lyrics and chords for this song are found in Resources.

Play the video song “Humble More.” Encourage children to create their own motions or imitate the motions of Miss Tina and the Quantum Lab crew. At the end of the chorus and verses, lead the children in counting on their fingers and shouting:

“One, two, three, four, brag less, humble more!”
