Have Small Group leaders greet the children as they enter the Large Group room and engage them in a game or conversation until time for Large Group to begin.

Welcome (1 minute)

Welcome back for the last lesson of our Superbook adventure titled “King Solomon.” If you were here last time, who was Solomon’s father? King David.

Yes, and what did Solomon ask God for? Wisdom and the ability to know right from wrong and an understanding heart.

Raise your hand if you would like to be wise.

Anyone who is wise will say yes to that, right? The wisest thing that anyone can do is to believe in Jesus as their Savior. So let’s stand and worship the Lord as we sing The Salvation Poem!

Be sure to preview the song so you can sing along with the children.

SuperTruth and Discussion (2 minutes)

Who likes to build things?

What do you like to build?Puzzles, forts, hideouts, video game virtual worlds, crafts, plastic brick structures, etc.

Today's SuperTruth is about building something very personal to each of us. It says, “I will build my life on God’s Word.” Let’s say it together. “I will build my life on God’s Word.”

Before King David died, he knew it was very important to remind his son Solomon once more to follow the ways of the Lord. David knew that if Solomon did this, God would bless his life and fulfill all of His promises to Solomon and his descendants. In other words, David encouraged his son to build his life on God’s Word.

Let’s say the SuperTruth together again. “I will build my life on God’s Word.”

Introduce Condensed Bible Story (1 minute)

If most or all children watched the Bible story video in a previous lesson, omit it here and go straight to the SuperVerse.

What are two important things we have learned about wisdom? True wisdom comes from God. We can ask God for wisdom and He will give us what we ask for.

Now we are going to watch a short version of the video about King Solomon. If you’ve already seen it, notice how many sacrifices King Solomon offered to God at a worship place called Gibeon.

SuperVerse (2 minutes)

Our SuperVerse today is Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

Who do you think said this verse? Jesus.

Have you ever listened to someone’s directions, and then chosen not to follow them?

This is similar to what Jesus is talking about. Being wise is not only listening to His Words, it’s also obeying them. Jesus compares this kind of wisdom to someone building a house on solid rock. What would be the benefits of building on solid rock instead of something like sand? It won’t change or move, it is strong and secure. It will last and won’t wash away.

Let’s say the SuperVerse together. Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

Children will have more time to learn the SuperVerse in Small Group.

Introduce Signposts Video (1 minute)

In our Signposts Video, we will explore the lives of two very wise people. One man was one of wisest people who ever lived on the earth. The other person is actually Wisdom Himself! Now, it would be wise to start our video so we can learn more!

Prayer and Send-Off (2 minutes)

Let’s pray before we move to Small Group.

Dear God, Your Word is a solid foundation for us to build our lives upon. Your Word keeps us safe and secure, no matter what comes our way. We praise You that Your Word is eternal and will never fade away. In Jesus’ secure name we pray, Amen.

In your Small Group game today, you will play a game called “Watch Your Step.” Let’s go find out how to play this game!

Teachers take children to Small Group classes for Grades 1–3 and 4–6. If the combined group is small, all children may stay together for Small Group time.

Game

  • Two poster boards for every team of 4–6 children, depending on class size
  • Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
  • One beach ball or large round balloon for each team
  • Marker
  • Painters tape or masking tape
  • Timer, such as a stopwatch, clock or watch with second hand, or timer app

Use the marker to write “God’s Word” in large letters on each poster board.

Inflate the beach balls or balloons.

Tape the poster boards on the floor in sets of two, leaving several feet between them; see diagram.

In Large Group, you were asked to notice how many sacrifices King Solomon offered to God at Gibeon. What is the answer? Over 1,000 sacrifices.

In the Old Testament, people worshiped God by offering animal sacrifices to pay the price for their sins. Later in our lesson, we’ll learn how Jesus paid the price for our sins once and for all by dying on the cross.

Let’s say the SuperTruth together: “I will build my life on God’s Word.”

Point to the poster boards on the floor. When we build our lives on God’s Word, we can stand firm in our faith, no matter what happens—good or bad! We are going to play a game called “Watch Your Step.” In this game you will stand on God’s Word, represented by the poster boards.

Hold up a ball or balloon. The ball represents whatever happens in our lives—good or bad! It can be success or failure, joy or sadness. No matter what happens, good or bad, we need to stand on God’s Word and stay firm in our faith!

Once I divide you into teams, choose someone you don't know very well to be your partner. When it’s your turn, you and your partner will hit the ball back and forth as many times as you can while always keeping at least one foot on the poster board. If both feet are off at the same time, or if the ball hits the ground, your turn ends and the next set of players immediately take your place and start hitting the ball. You get one point for every time you hit the ball, so count aloud as you play—then give your leader the total to keep score.

Divide the children into teams of 4–6 children. Teams should have an even number of children, or one player may need to play twice. Have children choose someone they don’t know very well to be their partner.

Set the timer for about 3 minutes and say Go.

One pair from each team plays at the same time.

After a pair completes their turn, they become spotters to watch the next players’ feet.

When time is up, count up the points for each team and declare a winner.

Conclusion: You did a great job standing on God’s Word! When difficult times come, we must trust in God’s Word to see us through. Even in good times and when we have joy and success, we must stand on God’s Word instead of trusting in ourselves and our own ability. No matter what happens, we must always continue to build our lives on God’s Word.

Teaching

Copy the three Signpost Cards onto cardstock if possible, in color or black and white.

Copy the Discipleship Challenge Mag-Sys Pattern on cardstock for any children who missed the previous lessons. See Lesson 1 for details.

Have a child select the first Signpost card and read it aloud. Tape the card to the wall or prop it up so children can see it. Lead a discussion with the information below. Repeat for the two remaining Signpost cards. Additional material is included for Grades 4–6 to look up and discuss.

Signpost 1 Wise and Obedient

Solomon is known as one of the wisest people who ever lived. His wisdom is a signpost to the person who is the very wisest: Jesus, the Son of God. The Bible tells us that when Jesus was a child, He grew in wisdom and in stature. He also grew in favor with God and people. (See Luke 2:52.) We should want to grow in the same ways!

Before King David died, what did he tell Solomon to do? Observe the requirements of the Lord and follow the ways of the Lord.

Solomon listened to his father and asked God for wisdom and something else. Do you remember what else he asked God for? To teach him the difference between right and wrong.

Yes; Solomon wanted to be obedient to God, as his father desired.

The word for wisdom in the Bible can be defined as a listening heart or an obedient heart. Solomon connected wisdom and obedience. Jesus made the same connection. He said that if you love Him, you will keep His commandments. He also said that He would send the Holy Spirit to help us and show us what is true. In the SuperVerse today, Jesus said that anyone who listens to His teaching and follows it is wise.

OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6

1 Kings 3:12:

“I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!”

Luke 2:52:

Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.

1 Kings 3:9:

“Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern Your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of Yours?”

John 14:15b–17 (cev):

15 “If you love Me, you will do as I command. 16Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you. 17The Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don’t see or know Him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.”

Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

Signpost 2 Everyone Needs Wisdom

God was pleased when Solomon chose to ask for wisdom instead of selfish things. Because of this, God gave him wisdom and a lot more! Jesus tells us that if we put God’s kingdom first and live righteously, He will give us all we need. Solomon humbly confessed to the Lord that he needed help to govern God’s people. He said he felt like a little child who didn’t know which way to go. Everyone needs God’s wisdom. The Bible tells us that wisdom will guard us and protect us. Wisdom is so important that the Bible says that getting it is the wisest thing we can do! In today’s Bible story, when did the people of Israel recognize that King Solomon was filled with God’s wisdom? When he decided which woman was the true mother.

OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6

1 Kings 3:10–14:

10The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. 11So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing My people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—12I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!13And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!14 And if you follow Me and obey My decrees and My commands as your father,

Proverbs 4:7:

Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.

1 Kings 3:28:

When all Israel heard the king’s decision, the people were in awe of the king, for they saw the wisdom God had given him for rendering justice.

Matthew 6:33:

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”

class="student_answers">Signpost 3 Wisdom Is Knowing Jesus!

Would you like to know the best way to find wisdom? The answer is to know Jesus! The Bible tells us that Jesus is the key to God’s mystery. All wisdom and knowledge are hidden away in Him! Jesus tells us that whoever listens to His teaching will increase in understanding and have an abundance of knowledge. So, the more we get to know Jesus, the more wisdom we receive from Him. It is important to remember, Jesus wasn’t just a wise person. The Bible tells us that for our benefit, God made Jesus wisdom itself!

God’s wise plan was to send Jesus into the world to die for us on the cross. Jesus chose to sacrifice His own life to pay the price for all of our sins. Then God raised Him from the dead to give us new life. Jesus makes us right with God: pure, holy and free from sin. Whoever believes in Jesus and accepts God’s plan to save us receives eternal life. Now, that is true wisdom!

OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6

Colossians 2:2–3 (cev):

2 I do it to encourage them. Then as their hearts are joined together in love, they will be wonderfully blessed with complete understanding. And they will truly know Christ. Not only is He the key to God’s mystery, 3but all wisdom and knowledge are hidden away in Him.

1 Corinthians 1:25a:

This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans.

John 11:25–26 (cev):

25Jesus then said, “I am the One who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in Me will live, even if they die. 26And everyone who lives because of faith in Me will never really die. Do you believe this?”

1 Corinthians 1:30:

God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; He made us pure and holy, and He freed us from sin.

Now, let’s move on to the Discipleship Challenge.

Discipleship Challenge/Practical Application

Display the model craft of the Mag-Sys. Give a Mag-Sys Pattern to any children who missed Lessons 1 and 2 so they can complete the craft at home.

What was our challenge last time? Praying for wisdom when you make choices.

Did anyone remember to pray for wisdom, and what happened when you did?

Part of your challenge was to read and discuss Proverbs 4:23:

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

What do you think it means to guard our hearts? To protect our minds and hearts from anything that isn’t pleasing to the Lord. To use wisdom in all we do so we don’t stray from God’s path and plan for our lives.

Hold up the Mag-Sys model craft and have a child open Door 3 and read the words aloud: I will use wisdom with my actions: Proverbs 24:3.

Your new challenge is to use wisdom in your actions and in all you do. Wise actions can bring glory to God when we act in a godly way or do good deeds for others. Read and discuss Proverbs 24:3 with your family if possible. Then ask God to help you put His wisdom into action each day to bring glory to Him! As we learned, Jesus said that wise people not only listen to His teachings—what else do they do? They follow and obey His teachings, too. (See Matthew 7:24.)

So let’s continue to pray for wisdom, to ask God to help us make wise choices, and build our lives on His Word by following His teachings.

SuperVerse

  • Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
  • Bibles or the Superbook Bible App

Write the SuperVerse and reference on the board. Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

You may choose to leave the SuperVerse on the board for the object lesson in Additional Activities.

Jesus said people are wise if they listen to and obey His teaching. He compared it to building a house on solid rock. In the next verse, He explained why. Read Matthew 7:25:

Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.

The house remained standing, safe and secure even in the midst of storms. Now, think about this for a moment. If Jesus is comparing our lives to the house, what would the storms represent to us? Problems, struggles, obstacles, temptation, trials, suffering, adversity, persecution.

Yes, storms are anything we face that could come against our faith and try to distract us from serving God. This is why King David placed so much importance on Solomon following the ways of the Lord and obeying His commands. When we build our lives on God’s Word, we are on solid ground so we can stand firm against whatever tries to move us.

Divide the class into groups of 3–5 children.

Allow about 3 minutes for the groups to create motions and actions for the SuperVerse.

Have each group say the verse and do the motions for the rest of the class.

Conclusion: You came up with some very creative ways to present the SuperVerse. When we listen and follow God’s Word, what does Jesus say we are? Wise!

Prayer

  • Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
  • Bibles or the Superbook Bible App

In our three lessons about King Solomon, we have been learning about wisdom and being wise. The SuperVerse for today tells us another important way that we can be wise. What can we do to be wise? Listen to Jesus’ teaching and then obey or follow it.

Yes, that’s right. The more we do this, the stronger we will grow in the Lord.

Solomon wrote in Proverbs 24:5:

The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.

We can choose to build our life upon the world’s wisdom, which is often changing or false; or we can choose to build our lives on God’s Word, which never changes and is always true!

Sit in a circle with the children. In today’s prayer time, let’s ask God to help us read, understand and obey His Word so we can be wise and grow to be more like Jesus. Give children time to pray.

Close in prayer after the children have prayed silently. Dear God, we want to be wise and to build our lives upon Your Word. Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to be our guide and teacher. Help us understand and apply Your Word so we can make wise choices. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Story Craft

Make double-sided color copies of the Which Mother Pattern on cardstock; one per child plus extras.

Or to save time in class, make just one craft ahead of time, then hold it up so the children can see it as you review the story with them.

To make the craft:

  • Cut out the cards on your pattern.
  • Carefully cut along the dotted line to create a slit in each card. Be sure not to cut past the dotted line.
  • Slide the two cards together along the slit. Make sure that the images line up properly.

Figuring out who was the true mother was difficult, even for a wise king! Yet with God’s help, Solomon was able to look at the situation differently. How did he find out the true mother?

Yes, he asked for a sword.

Do you think that Solomon ever really intended to hurt the baby? Children answer.

He used that threat as a way to determine which mother really loved the baby.

How did the two women respond?

When faced with the idea that something horrible might happen to the baby, one woman was deeply compassionate and pleaded for the baby’s life (page 3), even if it meant that the baby would be taken away from her. The other woman told the king to go ahead and end the baby’s life, so neither of them could have the baby (page 4).

Which mother really loved the baby? The one who begged to keep the baby alive.

One woman was in pain because secretly she knew that it was her baby who had died in the night. Sadly, she wanted the other mother to feel that same pain. If she couldn’t have the living baby, she didn’t want anyone to have him. She didn’t really care for the baby.

The true mother loved the child very much—in fact, she loved him so much that she was willing to give him up so he could live.

Take your craft home to share this story with your family!

Object Lesson

  • Table
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa Image
  • Ten or more blocks: Jenga type, wood building blocks, or dominoes
  • Large rock or stone with a flat surface
  • Sand
  • Two large, clear containers that can hold water: one for the sand and one for the rock
  • Two plastic jugs of water
  • Towels for spills
  • Whiteboard and marker; or chalkboard and chalk
  • Bible or the Superbook Bible App

Practice the presentation ahead of time so you can do it smoothly for the class.

Place both containers on the table in front of the children.

Write the SuperVerse on the board; it may already be on the board from the SuperVerse activity. Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

Let’s say the SuperVerse together. Matthew 7:24:

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”

Place the rock in the first container. Carefully begin to stack blocks on the rock as you talk.

Let’s say that these blocks represent a house like the one Jesus is talking about. He said all who follow His teaching are like a wise person who builds his house on a rock.

Here is what Jesus says the result will be for that builder. Read Matthew 7:25:

“Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”

Begin to pour water at the base of the rock, not directly on the structure. The water came and rose up. What happened? The house stood firm!

Now, in the next two verses after the SuperVerse, Jesus talks about those who don’t listen to Him and obey His Word. They are builders, too; but are they wise?

Read Matthew 7:26–27:

“But anyone who hears My teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

What does Jesus call these people? Foolish.

Loosely pour sand into the second container. Do not pack it down. Carefully stack blocks on the sand.

Jesus said the winds, rains and floods came. We said this represents things that come against us in this life like persecution, temptations, trials, and suffering. Begin to pour the water slowly into the sand, to erode it; do not pour directly on the structure. Pour until the structure sinks and falls over.

What happened to this house? It fell.

Why did the house fall? The foundation was washed away; it didn’t last because it wasn’t solid.

Hold up the picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Have you ever heard of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy? Do you think its builders meant to make a leaning tower? No!

It began to tilt as the second floor was being built in the year 1178. Can you guess why?

The cause was a weak foundation that was set in soft, unstable soil. As a result, people have had to work very hard to keep the tower standing! If builders hadn’t corrected the problem, the tower would have crashed to the ground long ago.

Conclusion: When we build our lives on God’s Word, we have a rock solid foundation that will never shift, sink or fail. No matter what comes against us, we can stand firm on God’s Word.

Magnetic Game

  • Painters tape or masking tape; or if playing outside, use chalk
  • Right and Wrong Signs Pattern
  • Gizmo Sign Pattern
  • Five sheets of cardstock
  • Large box
  • Two plastic flying discs; or you may substitue two large plastic coffee can lids, two plastic plates, or paper plates stapled together

Make two copies each of the Right and Wrong Signs.

Make one copy of the Gizmo Sign Pattern in color if possible.

Tape the Gizmo sign to the box and place it on the floor near one end of the room.

Tape the Right and Wrong Signs on the floor as shown in the diagram, about 10 feet from the box. If playing outside, draw the signs with chalk on the pavement.

King Solomon asked for wisdom so he would know the difference between right and wrong. In this review game, you will need to decide if a statement about the Bible story is right or wrong. You will then step on the sign to “lock in” your answer. Each correct answer scores five points. The good news is that even if you don’t answer correctly, you still have a chance to score a point for your team! If you were here for the Superbook adventure in Lesson 1, you saw Gizmo become a giant electromagnet that attracted metal objects to himself. Even the shields of Solomon’s soldiers flew out of their hands and stuck to Gizmo!

Hold up the discs or plates. These represent the soldiers’ shields. You will toss them toward Gizmo as if he were a magnet. If it goes in the box, you score a point for your team!

Divide the class into two teams. Each team stands single-file behind a set of “Right” and “Wrong” signs.

The first player on each team steps up to the signs and picks up a disc or plate.

Read the first question from the list below for both teams. The players “lock in” their answers by standing on the corresponding sign.

The players then toss a disc toward the box to try to score a point.

Have players retrieve their discs and return them to the next players in line.

The team with the most points wins.

Right or Wrong Question List

  1. David did not have any instructions for Solomon before he died. (Wrong)
  2. David told Solomon to take courage and to be a man. (Right)
  3. Solomon loved the Lord and followed the decrees of his father. (Right)
  4. Solomon offered over 1000 sacrifices at a place of worship called Geronimo. (Wrong—Gibeon)
  5. God asked Solomon what he wanted in a dream. (Right)
  6. Solomon told God that he would like to be the wealthiest and wisest man on the earth. (Wrong—He asked for an understanding heart and to know right from wrong)
  7. God was disappointed that Solomon asked for wisdom. (Wrong—He was very pleased)
  8. God was so pleased with Solomon that He answered his prayer and also gave him what he didn’t ask for—riches and fame. (Right)
  9. Solomon told God in the dream that he felt like a child who doesn’t know which way to go. (Right)
  10. Two mothers came to Solomon and asked him to care for a baby they found in the river. (Wrong—They asked that Solomon judge who was the true mother of the baby)
  11. One mother accidentally rolled over on her baby and the baby died. (Right)
  12. As the mothers waited for his decision, Solomon asked for a sword. (Right)
  13. The woman who cried out and asked Solomon not to hurt the baby was not the true mother. (Wrong—The true mother cried out)
  14. Solomon said to give the baby to the mother who cried out for him to live. (Right)
  15. Once all of Israel heard of Solomon’s decision, they were in awe and saw God’s wisdom upon him. (Right)

Conclusion: That looked like fun. It is important to ask for God’s help to determine right from wrong. The Holy Spirit and God’s Word will guide us into all truth!

Craft

  • Modeling clay: regular, self-hardening, or non-hardening
  • Toothpicks or sharpened pencils
  • Quart-size, sealable sandwich bags, one per child
  • Hand wipes or paper towels for children to clean hands afterward
  • Tables and chairs
  • Bible or Superbook Bible App

Build a sample craft to display in class.

Let’s say the SuperTruth together a little differently. The girls will say the first word and the boys say the second word, going back and forth until it is completed. Are you ready? Go! I will build my life on God’s Word.

Now it’s time to be creative and have some fun as you build your life on God’s Word!

Have everyone sit at a table.

Display the model craft.

Give each child some clay; at least two colors if possible.

Place the pencils or toothpicks in the center of the table to be shared.

First, have children form the shape of a Bible, which will serve as a strong base for their sculpture.

Have them carve “Bible” into the surface near the bottom as shown in the illustration.

They should carve their name or initials at the top, leaving room in the center for their sculpture.

They form clay figures to represent themselves, then place their figures on top of the “Bibles.”

Assist any children with special needs.

Allow children to show their craftsto the class.

Carefully place each craft in a sealable plastic bag for the children to take home after class.

Conclusion:Good job everyone. We want to build our lives on God’s Word! When we follow God’s wisdom, we will grow wise, strong and secure! Your craft can be a reminder to listen to Jesus’ Words and to follow them!

Activity

  • Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
  • Eraser
  • Bibles or Superbook Bible App

Write the Scripture references on the board: John 1:14; 1 Corinthians 3:10–11; 1 Peter 2:4–6.

Let’s say the SuperTruth together: “I will build my life on God’s Word.”

The Bible verses we will discuss today are about Jesus, who is the Word of God!

Give each child a Bible. Have children look up the verse then lead a discussion with the information below.

1. John 1:14:

So the Word became humanand made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

  • Who do you think this verse is describing? Jesus.
  • Why do you believe it is Jesus? The Father’s only Son is Jesus, Jesus became human and lived with people on the earth, Jesus displayed God’s glory, Jesus was faithful and full of love.
  • What does the first sentence of this verse say that Jesus is? The Word.
  • Yes, Jesus is the Word of God. God’s Word came to the earth and lived among the people. Jesus is God’s Message to us. Jesus didn’t just repeat someone else’s words, He taught with complete and total authority because He was then and is forever the living Word of God! So, knowing this, our SuperTruth says that we will build our lives on God’s Word; who are we actually building our lives on? Jesus, because He is the Word.

2. 1 Corinthians 3:10–11:

10 Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.

  • This was written by the apostle Paul. In verse 10, what was Paul able to do with the ability God gave him? He laid, or put down a foundation like an expert builder.
  • In verse 11, who was the foundation Paul laid? Jesus Christ.
  • How did Paul do this; by what method? He preached and taught about Jesus and lived his life in obedience to God’s Word.
  • Was Paul the only one allowed to build on this foundation? No, he said others could build on it but they must be careful and not change it.
  • Can you think of another foundation someone could lay? Salvation by works or good deeds, following the law, human righteousness.
  • Can we also be expert builders like Paul? How can we build on the same foundation? Yes we can; by boldly sharing the Gospel and living a life like Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit in us. Speaking the truth of God’s Word.

3. 1 Peter 2:4–6:

4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but He was chosen by God for great honor. 5And you are living stones that God is building into His spiritual temple. What’s more, you are His holy priests.Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.6As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.”

  • In verse 4, a cornerstone in Bible times was the most important stone of a building. It was placed at one corner and the rest of the stones were placed next to it. If the cornerstone was not true, or straight, the entire building would be out of line or crooked. If the cornerstone was removed, the entire structure could collapse. Who is the cornerstone of God’s temple? Jesus.
  • Why do you think verse 4 says “living cornerstone”? This cornerstone is not an object, it is a person. Jesus is forever alive and will never be replaced or removed.
  • What does it mean that Jesus was rejected? People did not believe He was God’s Son. They didn’t accept His teachings and that Heis the only way to God.
  • Since people rejected Jesus, what does that mean to you and your decision to build on Jesus? People will reject Jesus today, too. Others may disagree and even make fun of or persecute us for our beliefs
  • What does the writer call us in verse 5? Living stones and holy priests.
  • How does this relate to the SuperTruth? When we follow Jesus’ teachings and He is our foundation, we grow up spiritually and God places us where He wants us to function in the world and in His church. Jesus gives us life and we grow up in Him.
  • According to verse 5, can we please God on our own without Christ? No, only through Jesus can we please God and be acceptable to Him.
  • What promise do we have in verse 6? If we trust in Jesus as our foundation, we will never be disgraced or put to shame.
