Welcome (1 minute)

Hello, everyone, and welcome back! Today is the second lesson of our Superbook adventure, “Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream.” Nebuchadnezzar was a powerful king in Babylon. Before we find out more about him, we have the privilege of worshiping the King of kings and the Lord of lords! Let’s stand and worship Jesus now as we sing “Lord of Everything.”

Be sure to preview the song so you can sing along and do the motions with the children.

Lord of Everything

SuperTruth and Discussion (2 minutes)

Last time, we learned that God will reveal things to us if we do what? Ask.

Yes, when we ask, God will reveal great and mighty things to us that we can’t know on our own. He reveals things to us for different reasons. One reason is to equip us and empower us. That’s why our SuperTruth for today is: “God enables us to do great things.” Let’s say it together.“God enables us to do great things.”

Would you like to do great things?

Yes, I think we all would like that, and with God’s help we can. We will find out more about that in Small Group! In the Superbook adventure last time, who was trying to do too many things and having difficulty getting them all done? Joy.

Yes; that’s when Superbook took Joy, Chris and Gizmo back in time to meet King Nebuchadnezzar, who had a very strange dream. They also met Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who are also in other famous Bible stories that you may know. For the children who weren’t here last time, we’ll watch a short version of the video now. If you have already seen it, watch for something that one of the wise men drops when King Nebuchadnezzar orders that they allbe killed!

Condensed Bible Story

Superbook takes Chris, Joy and Gizmo to meet Daniel, who as a young man serves King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. Frightened by a nightmare, the king orders his wise men to tell him his dream and explain its meaning—or be killed. When Daniel asks his friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to pray, God reveals the dream. Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that it foretells the fall of his empire and the destruction of several others before all are replaced by God’s enduring kingdom.

Discussion (2 minutes)

What were Daniel and his three friends doing when Joy, Chris and Gizmo “crashed in” to the palace? They were working late at night, writing on scrolls as part of their duty as scribes for the king.

Who did Daniel credit for telling him the king’s dream and its meaning? God; he said that God reveals secrets.

What did the king do after Daniel told him the dream and its meaning? He kneeled before Daniel and actually worshiped him. He made him chief of all the wise men and governor of Babylon. (See Daniel 2:46–48.)

God enabled Daniel to do what the other wise men could not by telling him both the dream and the interpretation. Through it all, Daniel remained humble and gave God the credit.

Introduce Bible Background Video (1 minute)

In the Bible Background video we’ll learn more about Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, and Babylon, where today’s Bible story takes place. When Gizmo asks a question, wait for him to give some possible answers, then call out the one you think is right!

SuperVerse Discussion (1 minute)

Let’s say our SuperVerse together. Hebrews 13:21:

May He equip you with all you need for doing His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

Who equips us in this verse? God.

Does He give us just some of what we need? No, He gives us all we need.

God gives us everything we need to do His will and to please Him. God equips us and enables us to do great things for Him to fulfill His purposes and His plans for our lives.

Children will have more time to learn the SuperVerse in Small Group. If younger children are not able to memorize the entire verse, be sure they understand its meaning.

Prayer and Send-Off (1 minute)

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, Daniel needed to be equipped with knowledge that only You could give him. You answered his prayer and revealed the secrets of the king’s dream. Thank You for equipping us with everything we need to please You and to serve You. Help us do great things—not in our own strength, but with Your wisdom and power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In Small Group you will play a game where your team will be equipped with everything you need to win! Are you ready to find out more?

Teachers take children to Small Group classes for Grades 1–3 and 4–6. If the combined group is small, all children may stay together for Small Group time.

Game

  • It's All There Instructions: one per team
  • Medium-size boxes: one per team of five children
  • Disposable cups: one per child
  • Paper: one sheet per child
  • Marbles: one per child
  • Pillow cases or medium-size towels: one per team
  • Large paper or plastic bags: one per team
  • Painters tape or masking tape

Copy the It's All There Instructions; one copy for each team.

In a bag for each team, place an Instruction Sheet, five sheets of paper, five marbles, five cups, and one pillowcase. Place each bag into a box.

Tape a line near one end of the room.

Tape a second line about 12 feet from the first line.

In Large Group, you were asked to watch for something that one of the wise men drops after King Nebuchadnezzar orders them killed. What was it? A bird cage with a bird in it.

Very good! Observing a bird’s flight path was one of the methods the king’s wise men used to advise the king. Does that sound like a very good way to get advice about something? No.

How did Daniel receive his wisdom to advise the king? From God.

Yes, God equips us all in different ways to do different tasks. As our SuperVerse says, we have everything that we need to do His will and to please Him!

Divide the children into teams of five children. Children may play more than once on a team for smaller classes. Try to mix older and younger children on each team.

Have teams form separate lines behind the first line.

Give each team a box with a bag of supplies in it.

Identify the first and second lines for the children so there is no confusion during the game.

Explain that each team is equipped with everything they need in the box to complete all of the tasks on the instruction sheet.

Teams will all play at the same time.

Players on each team will work together to complete all three tasks on the instruction sheet. The first team that does this wins!

Be prepared to assist any children with special needs or teams that may not understand an instruction during the game.

Give each team a minute to look at the instruction sheet and to organize their team.

Start the game!

Conclusion: Good job! That really looked challenging and fun! Did you get stuck on any of the steps?

Were you equipped with everything you needed to complete the tasks?

Yes, I gave you all you needed. God enables us and equips us with everything we need to do His will and to please Him! Now, let’s learn more about how God equips and enables us in our teaching time.

Teaching

  • Equipment Bag Sign
  • Equipment bag: sports duffle bag or a backpack
  • Whiteboard and marker
  • Tape
  • Table
  • Journal Scroll Pattern for children who missed Lesson 1
  • Twine, yarn or ribbon pieces
  • Toy armor items: sword, shield and helmet
  • Journal Scroll model craft from Lesson 1
  • Optional: children to read the extra scriptures

Remove all markers from the board.

Copy the Equipment Bag Sign and tape it on the equipment bag.

Hide a marker in a pocket or purse.

Place the armor items in the equipment bag.

For the Discipleship Challenge, make copies of the Journal Scroll Pattern for children who missed Lesson 1. See Lesson 1 for details.

Stand behind the table and face the children.

Let’s say our SuperVerse together. Hebrews 13:21:

May He equip you with all you need for doing His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

God not only allows us to participate in His work, He gives us everything we need to do His will. What does the verse say He produces in us through Christ? Every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

I need one volunteer to write the name “Daniel” on the board for me. Choose a volunteer and wait ashe/she goes to the board to write “Daniel.”

Yes, go ahead and write Daniel on the board. Wait a moment.

Is there something wrong? The volunteer will say there is no marker.

Oh, yes, I’m sorry. I didn’t give you all you needed to do what I requested. Pull out the marker and hand it to the volunteer.

I’m thankful that God isn’t like me! He equips us with all we need to do His will and to please Him.

Hold up the marker. God can certainly equip us with physical things we need to do His will, like I just did with this marker. However, He often equips us with things we can’t see or hold in our hands. God equips us with various abilities and spiritual gifts that are invisible. Can you name some ways that God equipped Daniel to do His will? Boldness, courage, wisdom, favor, knowledge, the ability to interpret dreams.

These are not physical things that you can hold.

Read Daniel 1:17:

God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams.

God equipped Daniel and his three Hebrew friends with special abilities and gifts. The Bible actually lists nine spiritual gifts that God gives His children, equipping them to do great things.

Optional scripture: have children take turns reading 1 Corinthians 12:7–11:

7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

God also equips us with His armor to stand against the enemy and defeat him. Place the equipment bag on the table with the sign visible to the children. Take the armor items out of the bag, such as a sword, helmet, and/or shield, and hold them up.

Optional scripture: have children take turns reading Ephesians 6:11–17:

11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Can you really see the armor that God gives us? No, the armor that God gives us is invisible. Even so, it is effective and powerful; so powerful that we can resist and defeat the devil when he attacks us, tests us, or tempts us to do what is not pleasing to God.

Jesus used this armor! Does anyone know how Jesus was equipped to fight the devil in the wilderness? He was full of God’s Spirit and God’s Word.

Yes! Ephesians 6:17 calls this weapon the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God!

Another important way that God equips us is through the Holy Spirit, who produces spiritual fruit in us. Rummage through the equipment bag trying to find the fruit.

I may have a couple pieces of spiritual fruit in the bag to show you. Wait; is the fruit of the Spirit visible? Are they actual pieces of fruit? No!

You are right! I am just being silly! Like the Armor of God, the fruit of the Spirit is invisible, too! The Holy Spirit produces the fruit of God’s traits and characteristics in us so that we can please God—just like our SuperVerse says.

Have a child read Galatians 5:22–23a:

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control.

The Holy Spirit produces these good things in us so we are equipped to respond, think, act, and talk in a way that represents God. When we demonstrate these things in our lives, we bring glory to Him and do His will on the earth. What do you need today to do God’s will and to live a life that pleases Him? God wants to give us every good thing that we need! Sometimes He equips us with physical things; other times we receive invisible things like special abilities or spiritual gifts. No matter what God provides us, we can be sure it is good and exactly what we need to please Him and accomplish His will in our lives!

Discipleship Challenge/Practical Application

Display the model craft that you made. Give a Journal Scroll Pattern and a piece of twine or ribbon to any children who missed Lesson 1 so they can complete the craft at home.

Your challenge was to read and discuss Jeremiah 29:11, which says that God has good plans for you—to give you a hope and a future. Also, you were to ask God to reveal His plan for you, then write any thoughts about that on your scroll. Would anyone like to share something about that?

God’s plans are always for our good. Everything He does is to bring us closer to Him and to make us more like Christ! Continue to seek God to reveal more about His plan for your life. God doesn’t necessarily tell us everything at once; He often reveals one step at a time as we trust and follow Him! And ask God to reveal the gifts and tools He has given you to do His plan.

Our challenge for Lesson 2 is to read 1 Peter 4:10 and discuss it with your family if possible. The second part of the challenge is to understand what tools and spiritual gifts God has given you to do His plan. Continue to pray and seek God for His spiritual gifts as you obey His plan.

Write in your scroll journal any questions or thoughts about this. You will have a chance to share these next time. Remember, God enables us to do great things!

SuperVerse

  • Whiteboard and marker; or chalkboard and chalk
  • Eraser
  • Bibles or the Superbook Bible App

Write the SuperVerse on the board including the reference. Hebrews 13:21:

May He equip you with all you need for doing His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

This verse is part of a letter written to believers to encourage them. What a blessing He speaks over them, asking God to fully prepare and empower them to do His will for their lives in a way that pleases God.

Through whom does this power come to us? Through Jesus Christ.

Yes, every good thing and any blessing we receive from God comes to us because of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross. We cannot do anything outside of Jesus Christ that will please God. (See John 15:5; Ephesians 1:3.)

Let’s read the SuperVerse together from the board. Hebrews 13:21:

May He equip you with all you need for doing His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

Have the children lower and/or cover their eyes so they cannot see the board. Using the list below, substitute one word of the SuperVerse on the board at a time to alter the meaning of the verse, then have the children look at the board and raise their hands to tell you what word should be fixed. Write in the correct word, then repeat the process. You may wish to vary the order of the list.

  • Change “equip” to “punish”
  • Change “need” to “beg”
  • Change “doing” to “disobeying”
  • Change “will” to “word”
  • Change “produce” to “prevent”
  • Change “power” to “weakness”
  • Change “Jesus Christ” to “people”
  • Change “every” to “some”
  • Change “good” to “sinful”
  • Change “pleasing” to “pleading”

Conclusion: Through Jesus, God gives us all we need to do what pleases Him!

Younger children may not be able to memorize the entire SuperVerse. Be sure all children understand its meaning.

Prayer

  • Bible or the Superbook Bible App

In Daniel chapter one, God enabled Daniel to live in a way that was pleasing to Him even while he served King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. Daniel and his three friends chose to remain pure before God and not eat the rich foods the king provided.

Read< Daniel 1:8:

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.

After 3 years of training to serve the king, Daniel and his three friends became wiser and looked healthier than all the other men!

God enabled and equipped Daniel to stand strong in His faith and to boldly do His will and follow His Law. God also equips us and enables us to do His will and follow His commandments. In fact, God gives us a Helper to be successful. Do you know His name? The Holy Spirit.

Yes; when Jesus rose from the dead and went to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to live in us! The Holy Spirit enables and equips Jesus’ followers to please God and do great things!

Let’s bow our heads, close our eyes, and pray. First, thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to equip you with everything you need to do His will and to live each day to please Him. Allow time for children to pray silently or aloud.

Now, let’s ask God to enable us to do great things for Him as we trust Him and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit living in us. Allow time for children to pray.

Close in prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for equipping and enabling us to do great things. Through Jesus, we receive every good thing from You to live a victorious life! Help us to stand strong in our faith to fulfill Your will and plan for our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Balloon Activity

  • Balloons: one per team of 3–4 children, plus extras
  • Cardstock: one piece per player
  • Timer, such as a stopwatch, clock or watch with second hand, or timer app

Blow up the balloons and tie them closed.

Let’s say the SuperTruth together: “God enables us to do great things.”

To enable means to give power and authority to someone to do something. What does God enable us to do? Great things!

Yes, you could say that God activates and empowers us!

Have you ever played a game called freeze tag? You are frozen until someone taps or tags you; then you can move again. In other words, you are activated or enabled! In this game you will be equipped and enabled, and then equip and enable others! Each player stands on a square and is frozen. A teammate will tag you to unfreeze or enable you. The challenging and fun part is that you must bounce a balloon in the air as you move to a teammate to enable them. If a balloon hits the ground before you tag then next player, you must go back to your square and start again. The first team to move the balloon to one end of the line and then back wins. That means that each player will be enabled twice!

Make teams of 3–4 players depending on classroom space and the number of children in the class. Try to mix older and younger children on each team. For larger classes, play 2–3 teams at a time and then have a final elimination tournament.

Give each player a sheet of cardstock.

Have the teams form separate lines, with about 8–10 feet between each player in a line.

Leave about 6–8 feet between team lines.

Each player will place their cardstock on the floor and then stand on it.

Give a balloon to each team’s first player. The other players are “frozen” and cannot move from their cardstock until they are enabled or tagged by a team player with the balloon.

The first players bounce their balloon in the air as they walk to the second players. If the balloon hits the floor, they must pick it up and start again from that point.

When the first players are close enough to the second players, they will tag or enable them and then pass the balloon to equip them. Once the second players are tagged, they can move off their squares to help them get control of the balloon, but not before! The first players then return to the squares they began on.

The second players bounce the balloon to the third players and enable those players, and so on.

Play continues this way until the balloons makes it back to the first players, who are tagged again. The first team to do this wins.

Important: the balloons are never to be held; they must be bounced continuously.

Conclusion: What did it feel like the instant you were enabled? Exciting, fun, empowering.

How did it feel to enable and equip your teammate? Fun, exciting, relief to hand it off.

Let’s read a story about how Jesus did something like this with His disciples!

Read Luke 10:1, 17, 21:

1 The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places He planned to visit. 17 When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to Him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use Your name!” 21 At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and He said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank You for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased You to do it this way.

How did Jesus react to seeing that His disciples were able to do what He sent them to do? Joy, happiness.

God wants to enable us so we can do His will and accomplish His purpose in our lives. He gives us everything we need through Christ!

Alternative Play: Play as a large group in a large area like a gym using one balloon. Have players make a large circle, leaving about 10–12 feet between each player. Start the balloon at any player and start the time. Play as described above. Stop the time when the balloon travels all the way around the circle and the first player is tagged. Play again to beat the previous time.

Object Lesson

  • A/C power strip
  • Plastic outlet safety cover
  • Table
  • Wall receptacle
  • Small desk lamp or electric candle

Place the outlet strip and lamp on the table near a wall receptacle. Place the outlet safety cover over one outlet in the wall receptacle.

Stand behind the table as you talk. Let’s say the SuperTruth together: “God enables us to do great things.”

What does it mean when we say that God enable us? It means He gives us the power, ability and authority to do great things for His kingdom.

Yes, you could say that God activates and empowers us! King Nebuchadnezzar recognized that God enabled Daniel to do great and mighty things. Because of this, the king enabled Daniel by giving him authority over all of his wise men.

How does God’s power come to us to do great things? Hebrews 13:21, our SuperVerse for today, has the answer:

May He equip you with all you need for doing His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him.

How are we equipped? Through the power of Christ.

Yes, we are enabled through the power of Christ! Let’s demonstrate how this works.

Hold up the power strip. This power strip represents Jesus Christ.

Point to the outlet in the wall. This wall outlet represents God’s power.

Plug the outlet strip into the wall outlet. Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus said in John 10:30:

“The Father and I are one.”

They are connected.

Plug the lamp into the strip. Through Jesus, we are connected to God. That is the only way we can come to God and this is how we receive all we need for doing God’s will.

Turn the lamp on. God enables us to do great things through the power of Jesus Christ! Many people, including the religious leaders in Jesus’ time, wanted to go directly to God for their blessings and power. They thought they were good enough on their own and didn’t need to go through Christ.

Hold the lamp cord plug near the outlet. I can’t insert this in the outlet because it is blocked or closed. Jesus tells us in John 14:6 that no one can come to the Father except through Him! Plug the lamp into the power strip again and turn it on.

Ephesians 1:3 says that God blesses us with every spiritual blessing because we are united with Christ. It is through Christ that we are enabled, empowered and equipped with everything we need for our light to shine and do great and mighty things!

Let’s read what Jesus says about our light in Matthew 5:14–16:

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Pray: Heavenly Father, remind us to stay connected to You through Jesus. We want to let our lights shine so others can see Christ in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Coloring Activity

Copy the Octo-Giz Coloring Page, one for each child plus extras.

Can someone say today’s SuperTruth from memory? “God enables us to do great things.”

Great! Let’s all say it together. “God enables us to do great things.”

Give a coloring page and crayons, colored pencils, or markers to each child. Lead a discussion using the questions below as the children color their pages.

What is Gizmo doing in the picture? He is carrying Joy’s things that she needs to take to school.

If you remember our video from last time, what did Chris call Gizmo with all of his extra arms? Octo-Giz.

Does anyone remember what happened just a short time later to upset Joy? Gizmo slipped on a flyer that had fallen, and he threw everything into the air and on the floor. The plant pot fell on his head and broke into several pieces.

Have you ever had so much to do that you didn’t know how you could get it all done? What did you do? Children discuss.

Who did Joy turn to for help after visiting Daniel in Babylon? Joy prayed and admitted to God that she didn’t know how she could possibly do everything she needed to do.

Yes, she then told Chris that she was sure God would help her just as He helped Daniel!

Conclusion: God listens to our prayers and will equip us to do great things! Sometimes we may attempt to do too many things at one time like Joy. When this happens, what should we do? Talk to our parents or teachers, pray and ask God to help us find a way to solve the problem.

Bible Activity

  • Bibles or the Superbook Bible App
  • Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk

Make sure each child has a Bible to use for this activity.

Write one Bible reference on the board and allow children time to look up the verse. Be prepared to assist any children with special needs.

Ask one question at a time and allow children to respond. Children may offer more than one answer. This will help to engage children and lead to deeper thought and discussion. Erase the Bible reference and repeat with a new one.

Discussion questions for each Bible passage:

1. Who was enabled by God?

2. What great thing did the person do by God’s power?

3. What was the result?

4. How can we apply this to the present time?

1. Acts 2:14,37,41

14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.” 37Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 41Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

  • Acts 2:14; who was enabled? Peter.
  • Acts 2:14,41; what did he do? Peter preached boldly to the crowd about Jesus.
  • Acts 2:37,41; what was the result? Their hearts were touched. 3000 believers were added to the church and baptized.
  • How can we apply this to the present time? People need to hear the truth today. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we can boldly share God’s Word with others and those that believe can repent, be saved, and serve God.

2. Acts 5:12–16

12 The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. 14 Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

  • Acts 5:12; who was enabled? The apostles.
  • Acts 5:12; what did they do? They met regularly together with the people and performed signs and wonders among them.
  • Acts 5:14,15,16; what was the result? More people believed; sick people and people with evil spirits were healed.
  • How can we apply this to the present time? God is the same today as He was in the early church. He still heals and performs signs, wonders, and miracles today. When believers meet, God’s power is present and can work in their midst. The gift of miracles and healing are gifts of the Holy Spirit that God still uses in believers today. (See 1 Corinthians 12:4–11.)

3. Acts 7:51–60

51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you! 52 Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One—the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered. 53 You deliberately disobeyed God’s law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.” 54 The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen’s accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 56 And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!” 57 Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him 58 and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don't charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.

  • Acts 7:55; who was enabled? Stephen.
  • Acts 7:51–53; what did he do? He preached the truth boldly to the Jewish leaders.
  • Acts 7:54,57–60; what was the result? The leaders were furious when they heard Stephen preach God’s truth. They covered their ears, began shouting and shook their fists at him. They dragged him in the street and stoned him. Stephen endured it all because he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Stephen asked God to forgive the people who persecuted him.
  • How can we apply this to the present time? We may face opposition and persecution from those who are convicted by God’s Word and the light of Jesus in us. Many people around the world endure physical suffering and persecution for their faith. By God’s power we can face those who oppose us and persecute us. We can love and pray for our enemies and those who persecute us for our faith in Christ. (See Matthew 5:44.)
  • Can you name someone else who asked God to forgive those who persecuted Him? Jesus.
  • Where was Jesus when He did this? He was being crucified on the cross.
  • Optional: have children look up and read Luke 23:33–34:

33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed Him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on His right and one on His left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for His clothes by throwing dice.

Conclusion: Through Christ, God equips and enables us with all we need to accomplish His plan and to please Him. It’s up to us to step forward and trust Him!
