Welcome (1 minute)
Welcome, everyone! This is the last lesson of our Superbook adventure, “Jesus in the Wilderness.” Through Jesus, God supplies all of our needs—even forgiveness for our sins and eternal life! Let’s stand and sing The Salvation Poem and thank Jesus for defeating temptation and sin so that we can live victorious lives here on Earth now, and forever up in heaven!

SuperTruth and Discussion (2 minutes)
Our SuperTruth today is, “We are made right with God through Christ.”
Let’s say it together. “We are made right with God through Christ.”
Have you ever had a disagreement with a family member or a friend?
It is a sad and uncomfortable feeling to not know where you stand in a relationship with someone—you just want things to be restored to the way it was before! In order to make up after an argument, it’s important to ask for and receive forgiveness. Then, your relationship can be made right again.
When sin came into the world, no one was right with God. The relationship was broken. However, Jesus lived a sinless life on Earth and made it possible for us to be made right again with God. By trusting in Jesus as our Savior, we become righteous in God’s eyes. Our sin is cleansed and wiped clean because of the blood that Jesus shed on the cross to pay for our sins.
Let’s say our SuperTruth together once more. “We are made right with God through Christ.”
Now let’s make it personal for each of us and say “I am made right with God through Christ.” “I am made right with God through Christ.”
Introduce Condensed Bible Story (1 minute)
If most or all children watched the Bible story video in a previous lesson, omit it here and go straight to the SuperVerse.
Let’s watch a short version of the video about Jesus in the wilderness. If you’ve already seen it, watch carefully to find out what the devil tempted Jesus to do on top of the Temple.
Play Video 4: Condensed Bible Story (10.5 Minutes)
Superbook takes Chris, Joy and Gizmo to meet Jesus—first when He is a boy, speaking to the elders at the Temple, then when He is a man, resisting Satan’s temptations in the wilderness. The children learn how the Word of God can help them stand strong.

10C SuperVerse
SuperVerse (2 minutes)
Our SuperVerse today is 2 Corinthians 5:21:
Why do you think Jesus was the only one who could provide an acceptable offering to God for our sin—why couldn’t another human? Because Jesus was the only person without sin. He lived a perfect life.
Hebrews 10:10 says,
In the Old Testament, people had to make many offerings and sacrifices for their sins. Do we have to do that today? No.
That’s right. When Jesus died, His sacrifice paid for everyone’s sins—forever. The work has been done, once and for all. All we must do is trust in Jesus. Let’s say the SuperVerse again. 2 Corinthians 5:21:
Children will have more time to learn the SuperVerse in Small Group. If any children are not able to memorize the entire verse, be sure they understand its meaning.
Introduce Signposts Video (1 minute)
Let’s watch the Signposts video to learn how Jesus’ time in the Temple and the temptations He defeated help us to understand His ministry in a deeper way.

Prayer and Send-Off (2 minutes)
Let’s pray before we move to Small Group. Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to live a perfect life as a human on the earth, then to die as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. We praise You for giving us forgiveness and new life! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Raise your hand if you have ever played a game called “Bottle Flipping.” In Small Group today, you will have a chance to flip bottles to make a point. Are you ready to “make a stand”? Let’s go find out what it’s all about.
Teachers take children to Small Group classes for Grades 1–3 and 4–6. If the combined group is small, all children may stay together for Small Group time.
Game
- Six water bottles filled about 1/3 full of water, sealed tightly with lids
- Two 5'–6' tables
- Towel for any spills
- Timer—clock or watch with second hand, stopwatch, or timer app
- Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
- Bibles or the Superbook Bible App
Stand three or four bottles of water on each table, depending on the size of the class. For small classes use two bottles and one table. For larger classes, use more tables and bottles.
Flip to Stand! Children play a game using bottles.
Let’s begin with the question about the video in Large Group. Jesus was tempted three times by the devil. What did the devil tempt Jesus to do on top of the Temple? To jump so the angels could save Him.
Jesus replied with Scripture; what did He say? “You must not test the Lord your God.” (See Deuteronomy 6:16; Matthew 4:7; Luke 4:12.)
Jesus did not give in to any of Satan’s temptations, not only in the wilderness, but the entire time that He lived in the world. Because Jesus never sinned, He became the perfect offering for our sin so that we could be made right with God. Let’s say the SuperVerse together. 2 Corinthians 5:21:
Being made right with God could also be stated as “to be made righteous” or “to be in right standing” with God. In this game, we will play as teams—three people from each team will play at one time. You will have one minute to flip your bottle and try to “stick” the landing so the bottle is upright or standing up. Demonstrate bottle flipping in case some children are not familiar.
Do this as quickly as you can—the more attempts, the more you can score! The rest of your team will cheer you on and also keep track of the team points each round. You score one point for each bottle that stands up. You score five points if your bottle happens to stand up on its lid!
Divide the class into two even teams. One child may need to play twice to even things up.
Play one minute rounds and then record the teams’ scores on the board. The team with the most points after a certain number of rounds wins. Try to let children have at least two turns. Encourage players to cheer loudly for their teammates and shout out the points for the round while they play.
That was fun! You all are good flippers. Were you able to stand your bottle every time? No!
It isn’t easy to get your bottle to stand up. It requires some skill. There is no amount of skill that can enable us to be made right with God and to stand in His presence. No matter how hard we try—no matter how good we are—it isn’t enough. To be made right with God is only possible through Christ! It’s time for our Signpost teaching about how Jesus’ life and ministry are a model to help us grow spiritually and conquer temptation.
Teaching
- Jesus in the Wilderness Signpost Cards
- Three sheets of cardstock or paper
- Optional: tape
- Bibles or the Superbook Bible App
Discipleship Challenge materials for children who missed previous lessons:
- Jesus in the Wilderness Spirit Headphones Craft
- Craft stems
- Cellophane tape
- Sample craft made in Lesson 1
Copy the three Signpost Cards onto cardstock if possible, in color or black and white.
Have a Discipleship Challenge ready for children who missed Lesson 1.
Make copies of the Spirit Headphones Craft—one per child. Give each child a chenille craft stem. See Lesson 1 for details.
All for Us: Jesus defeated sin and temptation to save us and give us eternal life.
Have a child select the first Signpost card and read it aloud. Tape the card to the wall or prop it up so children can see it. Lead a discussion with the information below. Repeat for the other two Signpost cards. Additional material is included for Grades 4–6 to look up and discuss.
Signpost 1 God’s Word Equips Us
When Mary and Joseph discovered that Jesus wasn’t with them after the Passover celebration, where did they find him? In the Temple.
What was He doing there? Jesus was discussing the Scriptures with the Jewish leaders.
The Bible tells us that the leaders were amazed at His understanding and answers. Even as a child, Jesus was studying God’s Word, which prepared Him as an adult. At a young age, Jesus gave us an example to follow. The more we know and apply God’s Word, the stronger we will grow spiritually. Psalm 119:11 says:
To hide God’s Word means to actually treasure and place a high value on it. The Word inside us cannot be taken away. We can use it to make wise decisions and choices and to stay on God’s path for our lives.
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, what did He use to fight back and have victory over the devil? He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and He quoted Scriptures— God’s Word.
We can also use God’s Word as a shield and a weapon against temptation.
OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6
Luke 3:45–47:
Hebrews 4:15:
Signpost 2 Focus on Things Above
Jesus knew from the very beginning what God sent Him to Earth to do. God’s purpose and plan were more important than anything in this world. Jesus told His parents that He must be about His Father’s business. This was Jesus’ priority. Satan tried to tempt Him with the power, fame, and material things of this world. Yet Jesus stayed focused on things above—eternal things that will last forever. In Matthew 4:3 (NKJV), Jesus tells Satan:
Many people believed the Messiah would be an earthly king and would solve their physical problems. Jesus’ own disciples believed that He would establish His kingdom on Earth. When the people saw Jesus’ signs and wonders, they sought to make Him king.
Satan promised Jesus the glory of the kingdoms of the earth and authority over them if Jesus would only worship him. Eventually, Jesus would be given authority over all people—but not from Satan! God gave that authority to Jesus once He had humbly completed God’s work on the earth.
Philippians 2:8–11 says:
As followers of Christ, we must keep our eyes on the things above, and not on the things on the earth. When we follow God’s will for our lives instead of giving in to our own selfish desires, we will share in Christ’s glory! (See Colossians 3:2–4.)
When Jesus was baptized, God spoke from heaven and declared that He was pleased with His Son, Jesus. God is well pleased with us when we choose to obey, serve and worship Him above all else.
OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6
John 6:14–15:
Colossians 3:2–4:
Luke 4:5–8:
Signpost 3 Jesus Came to Save Us
Jesus did not come to rule us as an earthly king. He came to do much more—more than anyone else could ever do. He came to help us and heal us—not just physically, but spiritually, too.
When Jesus was on the cross, He could have easily called on angels to rescue Him. Matthew 26:53 says:
Jesus did not ask to be saved from death on the cross. He knew He had a higher purpose. He gave His life so that we might be saved. Jesus could have saved Himself, but all people would have been lost. He was willing to pay the price because of His love for us. John 3:16 says:
Jesus overcame temptation and He overcame sin and death. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are made right with God and have a wonderfully close relationship with Him, now and forever in heaven.
OPTIONAL VERSES FOR GRADES 4–6
Luke 4:9–12:
2 Corinthians 5:21:
It’s time for our Discipleship Challenge where you will be challenged to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading to make wise choices in all that you do.
Discipleship Challenge/Practical Application
Give any child who missed Lesson 1 a Spirit Headphones Craft and a craft stem to assemble the craft at home.
Hold up the sample craft. Last time, your challenge was to listen to the Holy Spirit to help you do something—what was it? Make wise choices in what l choose to look at.
Would someone like to share your challenge experience? Children share.
Another part of the challenge was to learn and possibly memorize Hebrews 12:2 (CEV). Can anyone say it for the class?
Tape a #3 ear pad on top of each #2 ear pad. Let’s read the challenge on the #3 ear pads. What I Do—2 Timothy 2:22
This lesson’s challenge is to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading to make wise choices in all that you do. We need to live wisely and keep in step with the Lord so we can follow His plan for our lives. God does not want us just to avoid temptation; He wants us to be filled with joy and pursue everything that is available to us as His children. Pray and ask for the Holy Spirit’s help to live in a way that pleases God, to show His love to others.
Learn 2 Timothy 2:22, and if possible, memorize it. Discuss the verse with your family if you are able to.
Optional: read 2 Timothy 2:22 (CEV) now and discuss with the children since this is the last challenge for the course.
SuperVerse
- Whiteboard and marker, or chalkboard and chalk
- Beach ball or soft foam ball
- Timer—clock or watch with second hand, stopwatch, or timer app
Write the SuperVerse in the center of the board. 2 Corinthians 5:21:
Superbook Catch and Shout: Memorize the SuperVerse with a group activity.
Let’s read our SuperVerse on the board together. 2 Corinthians 5:21:
In the beginning of creation, Adam and Eve were tempted by Satan to disobey God. They gave in to this temptation, and sin came into the world. From this point, people were separated from God and became unrighteous in His sight. This means they were no longer right, or in right standing with Him. To solve this problem, God sent His only Son Jesus to live a perfect life here on the earth and to become the perfect offering for the sin of the world. Only through Christ’s sacrifice can we be made right with God. There is no other way! (See Romans 5:15–21.)If you have not accepted Christ as your Savior, you will be given an opportunity to do so in our prayer time. Today, you can become right with God!
Let’s do an activity which will help us learn today’s SuperVerse.
Have children form two lines perpendicular to the board, with several feet between the two lines.
Players line up directly across from another player opposite and facing them. (See illustration in Get Ready.)
Hand the ball to the first player at one end. The player shouts the first word of the SuperVerse and then passes the ball to the second player directly across from him/her.
The second player catches the ball, shouts the next word of the verse, and passes it to the third player across the row.
Continue this way until the entire SuperVerse is completed. Record the time on the board.
If the ball hits the floor, the player who last touched the ball picks it up and starts play with the next word of the verse.
Play additional rounds. Begin with a player who didn’t take a turn or a player at a different end.
Conclusion: Jesus never sinned; yet He loves us so much that He died to make us right with God and empower us to live for Him. Isn’t that wonderful?
If any children are not able to memorize the entire verse, be sure they understand its meaning.
Prayer
- Bibles or the Superbook Bible App
Right Prayers: Communicate with God.
Let’s say our SuperTruth together: “We are made right with God through Christ.”
God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to rescue us from our sin. Through Jesus’ offering, we are made right with God through Christ. Yet, we need to do something before we can receive God’s gift through Christ. As I read Romans 3:22–25, listen for the answer.
Raise your hand if you know the answer! What must we do before we can receive God’s gift? Place our faith in Jesus Christ. Believe that Jesus sacrificed His life and shed His blood for us.
Who did Jesus come to rescue; who can be made right with God? Everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
We must believe in Jesus and place our faith completely in Christ—not in our own good deeds or actions. The work is done—completed; there is nothing we can add to it. His perfect sacrifice fulfilled God’s requirement.
If you trust in Jesus as your Savior, you are right with God; there is nothing better than that! Close your eyes and bow your heads. Thank Jesus for His ultimate sacrifice on the cross, then thank Him for helping you every day to resist temptation and sin as you freely serve God.
If you want to be right with God and have not asked Jesus to be Your Savior, today can be your day! Each time I pray, I will pause so that you can repeat the words aloud or in your heart.
For those who have prayed this prayer before, you can still repeat the words with us and rejoice in your salvation! You can also pray in your heart for anyone who may believe in Jesus for the first time today.
Close in prayer, allowing time after each phrase for the children to pray silently or repeat aloud after you: Dear Lord Jesus… I believe You died on the cross for me… to pay the price for my sins… to make me right before God… and to take me to heaven someday… Come live in my heart… Fill me with Your Spirit… so I can live to please You… In Your saving name I pray, Amen.
Follow up with any children who prayed to accept Jesus as their Savior. Encourage them to download Gizmo’s Bible Adventures, a free 30-day devotional for children and their families. Visit Superbook.CBN.com/Pages/Discover/KidsDevo/Gizmos-Bible-Adventures.
Role Play
Make a copy of the Role Play Cards, then cut them apart. Read over all the scenarios and choose the ones that are most appropriate for your class. Note that two of the cards call for the children to think up a situation where someone their age would be tempted.
Act It Out: Make up skits about how to deal with temptations.
Depending on the size of your class, divide the children into groups of two to four children. Try to pair newcomers with regular attendees. It may also be helpful to pair boys with boys and girls with girls.
Give each group a Role Play Card containing a scenario that you think each particular group can relate to. (Note that two of the cards call for the children to think up a situation where someone their age would be tempted.) Encourage the groups to work quickly, giving them about 5 minutes to create a skit about the scenario. During that time, check on their progress and give suggestions as necessary.
After about 5 minutes, have the groups volunteer to read their scenarios, then perform their skit for the rest of the class. Clap for each skit, then ask the class to discuss other ways that children could deal with that particular temptation.
Object Lesson
- Two hard-boiled eggs in their shells (one is extra)
- Pencil
- A towel to place on the floor for eggshells
- Hand sanitizer to pass around after the lesson
- Jesus in the Wilderness Egg Stand
- Container for peeled egg after demonstration
- Cellophane tape
- Bible or the Superbook Bible App
Hard boil two eggs, leaving them in their shells.
Make “Christ” egg stand using illustration.
A New Heart: Demonstrate a right heart toward God through Christ.
Today’s lesson is about how we are made right with God through Christ. What happened in the beginning of creation to cause people to not be right with God? Sin came into the world, Adam and Eve sinned.
Sin separated us from God. Yet, God loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us on the cross to be the offering to pay for our sin. Let’s say the SuperVerse together. 2 Corinthians 5:21:
Who can tell me what sin is? Disobedience to God’s Word; breaking God’s commands.
Sin is anything we do, say or think that displeases God. What are some sins that people might need to be forgiven for? Jealousy, pride, having idols in our life, lying, stealing, disobeying parents, cheating, selfishness, unkindness, using bad language, etc.
As children answer, write the sins on the shell of the egg with the pencil. Abbreviate answers to fit as necessary—it doesn’t matter if words overlap.
Have you ever touched a hardboiled egg? Pass the egg around so the children can touch the hard outer shell of the hardboiled egg.
How does the egg feel? How does it look to you? Hard, smooth, fragile.
This egg represents our hearts before we know Jesus. They are hard and stained with sin. Sin fills us with guilt and weighs us down. We cannot stand on our own righteousness—no matter how hard we try! Have children take turns trying to stand the egg up on the table, which is impossible.
We may feel like everyone sees our sin. Sometimes it may keep us from approaching God because we know He sees our sin and we are ashamed! But watch this! Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is all that is needed to forgive all the sins in the whole world! All we must do is believe in Jesus as our Savior and ask Him to forgive our sins.
Slowly peel away the shell. He removes our sin—just like I am removing the shell of this egg. Continue to peel until the shell is completely removed.
What does the egg look and feel like now? Soft, clean, different, new.
Pass around the peeled egg so all children can hold it. Remind them to be gentle and not to squeeze the egg.
This represents what takes place when we are forgiven—we are cleansed and made new—our sins are removed. Through Christ we are made right with God! Hold the egg up and rotate it in your fingers.
Can you see any trace of the sins that were written on it?
Place the egg in the stand with “Christ” facing them. Now we can stand through Christ!
Let’s say our SuperTruth together: “We are made right with God through Christ.”
When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins and cleanse our hearts, we get to start over with a new, clean heart—free from sin. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us:
That’s Good News, isn’t it?
Conclusion: Take the egg out and place on the table. Remember, we can never become right with God on our own. Place the egg in the stand. Only through Christ and His righteousness can we stand!
Coloring Activity
- Jesus in the Wilderness Angels Minister Color Page
- Crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers
- Bibles or the Superbook Bible App
Make copies of the coloring page, one per child plus extras.
Victory! Color a picture of Jesus after defeating Satan in the wilderness.
Give an Angels Minister Color Page to each child. Provide crayons, colored pencils, or markers to the children. Have children write their names on the back of their page. Use the following questions to lead a discussion as children color their page.
1. Why was Jesus’ human body weak? He had not eaten for 40 days and nights.
2. Jesus’ body was weak, but what was strong? His Spirit. He was full of the Spirit. (See Luke 4:1.)
3. How did Jesus fight against the devil’s temptations? He spoke Scriptures; He used God’s Word.
4. Who came to help Jesus when Satan was finished tempting Him? God’s angels.
5. What does it mean for us that Jesus resisted temptation and never sinned? Hint: think of the SuperVerse. He made us right with God; He became an offering for our sin.
6. Can we be made right with God by doing enough good things; why or why not? No—no amount of good deeds is enough. It is only by faith in Jesus. We have sinned and only the blood of Jesus can cleanse our sins. Salvation is by faith, not by works. (See Ephesians 2:8–10.)
Allow children to share their pages with each other.
Pray: Dear God, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to die for us so that we could be made right with You and spend the rest of our lives in Your glorious presence. In Jesus’ saving name we pray, Amen.
Bible Activity
- Bibles or the Superbook Bible App

Once and for All: Look up verses about Christ’s sacrifice to make us right with God.
Let’s say the SuperTruth together: “We are made right with God through Christ.”
Jesus willingly came from heaven to Earth to live a sinless life and die on the cross for our sins. By this act of love and sacrifice, we are made right with God for now and eternity. In this activity, we will look up verses about Jesus’ amazing sacrifice.
Note that the suggested answers are from the New Living Translation. If children are using different translations, their answers will vary.
Write the scripture references, one at a time, on the board for children to look up and find the answers. As necessary, help children not familiar with the Bible or pair them with a more experienced child. Have children raise their hands to answer.
