Leader Guide

Optional Opening Game

  • Sign Pages (4)
  • Painter's tape or masking tape
  • Cardstock, four pages
  • Scissors

Note: If time is short, skip this activity or save it for the end.
Make one copy each of the four signs in color or black and white and on cardstock.
Tape each sign to a different wall in the room.

Select a leader or an older child to be Saul. Have Saul stand in the center of the room and introduce him/her to the class.

In today’s Bible story, a man named Saul hunts for people to arrest them. We will find out why Saul does this a little later. In this game, you will try to be as quiet as you can as you move to one of the four signs and stand or sit beside it.

Let’s name the number and the animal that is on each sign. Stand beside each sign and ask the children what the number and animal is on the sign.

Here’s how the game works. Saul will close his/her eyes and slowly count aloud to five. While Saul counts, you quietly sneak around and quickly move to one of the signs. You choose which one; it doesn’t matter what sign anyone else chooses.

When Saul is finished counting, with eyes still closed, Saul will shout, “I think someone is hiding at sign number _____.” (1 Lion, 2 Dove, 3 Horse, 4 Lamb). You never know which sign Saul will say!

Everyone hiding by the sign Saul calls out is caught! But that’s okay; everyone just keeps playing. Let’s play two practice rounds to make sure everyone understands the game. Play as many rounds as time allows.

Optional: Play as before but players who are “caught” by Saul must sit out for one round and then reenter the game for the next round.

Conclusion: That was a fun game and you were very good at sneaking around quietly.
