Leader Guide
Optional Opening Game
- Humble Face Sign
- Humble Trait Pages (2)
- Scissors
- Painter's Tape or Masking tape
- One container - medium size box or clean trash can
Make one copy of the Humble Face Sign in color or black and white.
Tape the Humble Face Sign to the front of the box or container.
Make one copy each of the two Humble Trait Pages with 12 images total. If there are more than 12 children in the class, make enough copies for each child to have one card.
Cut out the twelve Humble Trait Cards.
Tape or mark a line on the floor.
Place the container with the Humble Face Sign facing the line about 4-6 feet from the line. Adjust this distance as desired based on the age and ability of the players.
Place the cards in a pile behind the line.
If you were here before and saw our Bible story, was Saul prideful or humble before he met Jesus? Prideful.
Yes, he was filled with too much pride. When Saul’s heart changed, he was filled with humbleness.
Point to the container. We are going to fill this container with things you would do or say to show you are a humble person.
The first player takes a Humble Trait Card from the pile and gives it to the leader to read aloud.
Note: If a player is able to read the card, allow the child to read it aloud.
Say a simple sentence using the word or phrase, for example:
A humble person is kind to others. A humble person listens to others. When you are humble, you don’t think you are more important than others.
The player then crumples up the card into a ball, stands behind the line, and tries to toss it into the container to fill it with humbleness. If the player misses, he/she tries again from the spot where the crumpled ball lands and keeps trying until it goes into the container.
Optional: Play another round and move the box further away to provide more of a challenge.
Straighten out the crumpled paper balls and play as before.
When a card is chosen, ask the children if they can think of a way to be or do what is on the card to show humbleness.
Conclusion: It is never good to be filled with too much pride; we should be filled with humbleness instead! A great way to start each day is to ask God to help you to be humble and loving, no matter what happens.
